One Bike to Rule Them All: Buying Advice

A little backstory

I started learning to ride in 2020, beginning with a Yamaha YBR 125 with L plates, which I absolutely loved. My first bigger bike was a Ducati Scrambler 400—its look was great, but it was too small for me in both seat height and engine size. After doing my DAS on an MT-07 and getting used to that power, I sold the Ducati at a small loss and bought an XSR700 for £3.2k, which I still own. It's great for getting around the city: nimble, fun, and perfect for urban rides.

One afternoon, I was browsing Autotrader and found an F800GS less than a mile away. It was a bike I'd admired a few times, so I went for it. I bought it, loved it, and took a few trips—it's a fantastic bike, paid just £3k! After doing the GS school in Wales twice, I wanted to get into laning, so I joined the TRF on the 800. I loved it but struggled to keep up with others on their smaller trail bikes. My lack of skill didn’t help either.

I then bought a KTM 350 EXF from the TRF group, a great price and a beautiful bike. I redid the same lane route I did on the 800, and it was much more enjoyable.

So, here I am with three motorbikes. I used to enjoy maintaining and servicing them, but with a little baby now, I don't have the time. What was once enjoyable has become a burden, so I want to reduce my collection to one bike.

Long trips on the F800GS are out of the question for a few years, so it's time for that bike to go. The KTM is great for lanes but not practical for town use—it has no proper key and is easily stolen. So, I’m looking for one bike that I can use on the lanes and ride about the city.

I saw the BETA ALP 4.0 in the TRF magazine, and it looks like it could do both tasks. Does anyone have experience with this bike and can share their thoughts?

If I sell all three, I should get something like £6-8k, havent checked recently, so that's the absoloutle limit of the budget.

TL;DR,
Advice for a motorbike, so be used for laning but also about town in London.

I’d look at something like a CF Moto 450 MT, though there’s a 6 month wait for them as so popular .
Great off-road but plenty of poke from the 42bhp parallel twin for onroad.

Or a Himalayan 450.
I have one and it would also do everything you ask but is a bit heavier than the CF.

Both bikes are in the lower end of your budget and they’d be brand new .

Keep the KTM and simply fit an ignition barrel to it. A friend did this with his Gas Gas 300cc enduro bike and it just gives a little reassurance that it’s more secure. I think the install cost him about £40👍

This would be my choice, still a little heavy, but single cylinder so wears it well.

The Beta Alp would be awesome on the lanes, less so on the roads, someone I occasionally ride with has just purchased a new one but not sure how he's getting on with it yet other than it left him stranded in Matlock a couple of weeks ago (I think it was electrical).

I've been thinking about downsizing from my Tiger 900 Rally, and all but decided that a KTM 690 Enduro would do the things I wanted, although suspect that would be HIGHLY nickable in London, as would the Beta. I paused on this idea when I got a PEX for my bike and realised I couldnt sell it.

My current thinking is either a 2025 KTM 390 Enduro R to supplement the Tiger, or a 2025 Beta X-Pro 300 as a more focussed lanes bike but both of these I think might stretch the budget (and I wouldnt recommend the lighter Beta X-Pro for use as a daily in London).

The Himalayan 450 would do everything you wanted with better tyres on (and maybe some work on the front mudguard).

My KTM 350 EXC-F has an ignition barrel and key, plus heated grips 😉

How about a Husqvarna 701 or a KTM 690 ?
Or perhaps a decent trail bike and a £1500 shitter for the ride into the city, so 2 rather 3 ?

Was just about to recommend same.

Thanks, I have done that, but it still doesn't have a steering lock, and anyone could turn it with a screwdriver... Plus I worry it looks too appealing in the bright KTM colours, where as the BETA is available in more nuteral colours... Good suggestion though

Had a Beta Alp 4
Great Suzuki DR350 engine
Poor chassis though
Also you say had, they've not been out for that long if I understand correctly, so you must've really not liked it much to have parted with it already? Or am I jumping to conclusions...!

Yamaha Xt600, you'll get a cracker for a lot less than your budget.

Problem solved in style. 👌

Hahaha I actually have a Yamaha 600 tt belgarda too, which I didn't mention. It's not ULEZ sadly, and a little annoying as it's carb and kick start only... but I love it dearly. Safely stored elsewhere for when I've made my millions and have a country estate to ride around...

XT660 then, electric start and compliant. 👍

At that budget you could look at a Honda CB500x or maybe even a NX500

Alternatively, more off road biased, as mentioned by Arsey, the CFMoto 450 or the Voge DS525X are well within your budget new

If you want to think outside the box look at an X-ADV 750

The original version of the Alp4
I would not touch the new one with a barge pole
It’s gonna be a pig off-road

Thanks Johnny,

I should have added, whilst I stand to make 6-8 from the sale of three bikes, I'd much rather not spend all of that on one new bike, but perfer 4+ years old.

My last insurance policy had to be third party only!!

What about a KTM 390 Adventure? Decent engine for road work and should be manageable on the lanes with proper tyres

How about the the 500/600 class of bikes from Voge and benelli . Easily in budget.
