Open Street Maps OSM - Installing additional maps into BaseCamp and onto the SD card

Actual route test today failed miserably during the first mile of a 250 mile route: Nav V froze during zooming. My NavV OSM map (gmapsupp.img) is a small 376Mb file of southern UK, leaving 8Gb free space on the SD card. Yes, its could be a card read issue. Great in theory, I was excited, but in reality not useable on my hardware. Note Nav V performed flawlessly during the remaining 249 miles, using Garmin maps.

I suspect there is an issue somewhere other than just using OSM maps. As you say it could be the card. I'm a little puzzled by your file size, if I look at my version the south of England.(that is south of Birmingham) is 290Mb Maybe this is a clue-depends on what you call the south!

I have never had problem on three devices, the same applies to several people I know who run OSM maps.

Shame though because the OSM maps are now superior here in the UK but if your device can't cope it's not much use to you. Lets hope we hear from other Nav V users

John, at the risk of showing my ignorance, I have downloaded the OSM map tiles for Morocco (for a trip starting Tuesday) to my PC (Mac) and I have a folder, which I assume has the mapping on it (89.9mb) so how do I get this mapping to show up in Basecamp and also on the card in my Garmin 390?

On a Mac at least and going from memory:

1. When you click on the downloaded file, it is installed somewhere and somehow into or onto your Mac and useable by BaseCamp automatically

2. In BaseCamp you then select it from the drop down list of installed maps

3. I used Garmin's own Mapinstaller to install the map from my Mac onto my Nav V's SD card

4. To remove maps from my Mac, I use Garmin's own Mapmanager

5. To remove maps and files from the SD card, I use Clean My Mac, which I use for other cleaning duties, too.

I remember it was all very easy.

Failing that:

This one is a bit longer but is also quite good:

When it comes to the mysteries of a MAC I am way way behind you. I am almost completely ignorant as to how they work. I see Richard has provided the answer, although I would point out that you don't add the maps to Basecamp, you add them to your computer and Basecamp uses them. On my PC I can download the maps, allowing he set up operation to do its work. The maps are then available from both Basecamp and Mapsource, something that I think would not happen if they went into that black hole called Basecamp

i am pretty sure that basecamp and mapsource use the same folder to store and access the map data, this is on a pc, unsure about mac but dont see why it would be different, i may be wrong.

Gawd knows; I just push the buttons and hope for the best after reading the 'How to do it' posts and assorted websites. I have no idea where the files and folders go, I'm just pleased when they work... And in BaseCamp they do seem to all work jolly easily, on a Mac at least. It seems BaseCamp can work jolly well on a PC, too.

I'll give it a go with my Nav V next time I have an excuse to.

I copied gmapsupp.img directly to the maps folder on the NavV sd card cos I read somewhere that Garmin's search for the files regardless where you put them ??
Perhaps it's my failure to use Mapinstall thats the cause of my lock ups . However the maps work as long as I don't zoom in and out which strikes me as a read/processing issue.

I'll give it a try later on my lowly 390. I must admit I don't often try to zoom in on the map whilst on a route. I have done it a few times without problems though.

Downloaded most of Europe in 2014 ,put a copy in My Garmin folder on Windows vista PC . They showed up in both basecamp and mapsource. Saved map tiles to a spare garmin 2610 worked a treat. Was then going to do same on a faster 2820 for the Mrs, she declined my offer because she says I just follow you :D
Definitely works well on old one as many have said.:thumby:

I shall not dwell on this too long, but it seems that there are two different ways of getting the OSM into your device
Use the link discussed, which later sends an email link, containing .exe file for Windows or .zip file for Mac and these place the OSM into Basecamp
Then either;
a)Use Map Install to use that data to generate and and install the gmapsupp.img into the device (Wapping's method)
b)Use the email link gmapsupp.zip which downloads gmapsupp.img direct to your computer,, which can then be copied direct to the device (my method).
This two different ways of inserting gmapsupp.img, but ARE THEY THE SAME ? More research.........

Result; maps now installed with Mapinstall and the NavV still locks up or shuts down during zooming . Card/ corruption or whatever ?

Well it all seems to have worked for me, let you know when I land in Morocco on Saturday:)

I find that sometime the direct download option is not available (sometimes it is), any reason for this?

Well..... What's the news?

Give the poor man a chance he only arrived yesterday!

I can report that the last route I used with an up dated OSM map (downloaded the same day) worked fine on my 390. Did not miss out via points at all. Coped well with us turning slightly off route to search for some much needed ice cream. I removed the device from the bike(we are not in Austria now!) and it remained off for some 40 mins. When we rode off it picked up the route straight away, simply adding a short section to take us from where we had parked back to the original route.

Coincidentally since putting OSM onto my 390 via a micro SD it has stopped displaying speed limits on either OSM or Garmin maps.
Coincidence? Or have I "fiddled" them away?

Don't know what you might have done but they display in both sets of maps on my 390 so it looks like something other than the OSM maps change things

Hmmm.
Thanks for that. A away for a few days. Will tinker when I get back.
