So the 'cutting out' issue as been sorted but the new ailment the SMT is now suffering is a very snatchy throttle. Now, I know they're renowned for it as standard but it wasn't like it before KTM worked on it. I bought the bike last December having test ridden my friend's, his throttle was horrendous but this one was advertised as having an RC8R Progressive Throttle, claiming to vastly calm down the problem and in fairness, it really made a big difference. While the bike was in the garage last week, amongst many other tests, they checked the throttle sensor and fitted heated grips. When I collected the bike on Saturday I immediately noticed how bad the throttle seemed to be but I wasn't sure if it was because I was comparing it to my other bikes that I'd been riding whilst the SMT was off the road, or whether it really had been adjusted by the mechanic. 200 miles later, I was convinced a setting had been changed so I emailed the garage to enquire. They responded saying that all they had done was removed any 'play' in the throttle and if I wasn't happy then I could adjust it back.
Does anyone have any knowledge on the RC8R Progressive Throttle? Would removing the 'play' affect its performance? My problem is that I don't really understand what one is, or what it does.
The bike's having its first MOT tomorrow via an old friend of mine who works at a local bike garage, I'm going to ask him to take a look at it but really would welcome any recommendations for you if you think you might be able to help (again - and thank you very much - again) :)

Jo

Jo,

The only way that I could see the play having any influence would be going from a closed to open throttle where the first part of throttle movement just takes up the slack but I'd be surprised if it was that but probably worth adjusting the slack back in to see if it has an impact. The progressive throttle is just an eccentric cam where the cable joins the throttle grip resulting in smaller throttle adjustments off a closed throttle but having a greater effect on throttle position as you open it up e.g. the first 1/4 turn may only open the throttle 30% and the next quarter turn the remaining 70%.

Thanks for clarifying that Dave, I think I get it now and will adjust a little bit of slack back into it to save the ride being too jerky in slow traffic, or just get used to it as it is. Either way, it's great to have the bike running again. Thanks so much for your help.

Best regards,

Jo :)

Adjusting the play in the throttle ,i think does make a huge difference,On my 950sm there was a bit of play when i bought the bike,i adjusted and took any play out and initially it was a bit too instant with the power but i'm used to it now and prefer it.
But i do think any of the 950/990 engined bikes are better ridden with the throttle cracked open ,they don''t 'potter' about very well!

Get a G2 throttle cam.

Thanks Tim, do you have experience with these?

Thanks Doyle, yes the instant power is great to have where you can use it but my heart was in my mouth when filtering through traffic etc and I found myself having to feather the clutch far more than usual to try to tame the beast. Maybe I will get used to it as many folk say they have.

Thanks both :)

Yes, had one on the 690, check out their website. Your looking for the one with the lowest pick up at the beginning of the throttle opening.
I actually found that putting some slack into the throttle cable made it much smoother, it gave better feel as you're about to put some power down.:nenau

Thanks for that Tim, I will certainly look into it, as it is a pain around the town but I've got to say that today I've had grin factor 10 whilst ripping up the Worcestershire tarmac with an almightily responsive throttle and immediate power on tap, so maybe I can just get used to it :D

If your on the KTM forum try the link below. I did this mod about three years ago and haven't looked back or worried about mini roundabouts or filtering since.

Hi Allan,

I registered on the KTM forum over 4 months ago and apparently "I'm still in the queue to be accepted", luckily my mate has been adding my posts for me so I have picked many brains.

Thanks for your link. I've had the Akra map done so from reading what they're saying, my wires have already been disconnected, so to speak :roll eyes:

I'm beginning to get fed up with trying to sort it and am leaning towards saying 'feck it' I'll get used to it as it is. It makes the ride more 'interesting' and keeps me on my toes.

thanks,

Jo

If it's still snatching than I reckon they haven't been. I know people who have got the Akra map, throttle cam etc and still snatching, so cut em anyway, just do it in a way that they can be reattached as per the link.
There is a cable and ecu thing you can buy and turn it off on the laptop, but now were into BLAH! BLAH! Area so I'll get my coat.
But once it's sorted, it's like a breath of fresh air. EU emissions etc
Go on have a little cut job!

I'm not cutting anything that I don't understand, maybe I should forward your link to KTM Tewkesbury to put the responsibility on them?
