Ortlieb Rackpacks and Roll Bags

I was at the Scottish Motorcycle show today and all I bought were a couple of Exped waterproof wide bags 20 litre Yellow 35x40x25 cms £8.95 and 42 litre Terracotta 45x40x25 cms £9.95 which turned out excellent fits for my left & right BMW Vario panniers :thumb2

tents..

Should have news on the Exped Tents next tuesday and will be speaking with Vaude today. So hoping to have some in shortly.

Jetboils have been going well and now down to my last one, but will be restocking them shortly.

all the best..
John..

rocks

I am looking at Ortleib Rackpacks.

I have the Touratech luggage plate on top of the standard R1200GS rack. Looking for a bag to go across the top of this, 400mm wide, with a minimum overhang and also with decent capacity. What would you suggest? 35litre??

I take it that they do not come with a base after reading some of the post above:augie

Do you sell elastic cargo straps (Rok Straps)?

Thanks

Nigel

rackpacks

Hi, sorry did not spot your post there..
right..
The 24ltr are 48cm in length and the 54cm in length.
So the 24ltr will only over hang a little at each edge, not too much. The 54cm will over hang about 7cm's so again not too much. The roll down tops cause the smaller bags to sag less with each size decrease. So really those would be my two of choice.

The rackpacks are entirely soft bags with no former in the base, but I have used a piece of corrugated plastic (house for sale sign I found floating free somewhere :augie) as a former from time to time. Works pretty, for as you fill the bag it usually takes on a curve shape from the bottom of the bag and thus becomes rigid.

As for Rok strap or their ilk, sadly I have not been able to secure a supplier I am afraid.

Ortlieb Rackpacks

John, hi

Just to say publicly, thanks very much for sending the Rackpacks so promptly and to let other tossers know, if they dont know already, that John knows his stuff and is a general allround good guy.

Pleasure doing business with you.

Best regards :thumb2

I see you are in Surrey, if anywhere near Godstone (M25 J6) go to Fairalls Builders Merchants (light side not heavy side), they have an extensive selection of Rok Straps:thumb

That would have been handy to know a couple of weeks ago.

Ordered some from the US for less than the cost from NippyNormans.

Straps..

Sadly not able to do Rok straps at the moment. I am hoping to get something sorted in the next month or so, but its hard to sort deals with many of the US makers min volume requirements.

Nic, thanks for the comments, always glad to help when I can.

Anyone need any gear before the May UKGSER event?

John..

Preparations..

Seems the summer is finally here. I know a few people were waiting for particular rackpack sizes. We now have most sizes in stock and more arriving shortly too.

Grey Rackpacks..

Oh yes, they are available in Grey too for those out there who wish to match their bikes colour..lol.

Also just recieved a set of Ortlieb Waterpoof Soft Panniers. These will be up on the shop shortly once I get the photos sorted.

just found this thread - very useful :)

We presently have the 45ltr ortlieb but it's a bit too small for our camping stuff so we're thinking of getting the 89ltr... back of 1100gs. It sounds as if it's huge - double size of the one we have at present but dimensions make it out only to be a bit bigger. Cold you advise?

Thanks

Two up??

Issy, from the "we" in your post i am going to assume your two up..

If so, then you may be able to fit a single 89ltr behind the pillion on the 1100 but it will depend on how you guys sit when on the bike and your relative heights.

The 89ltr is chunkier and slightly longer than the 49ltr and it easily takes my tent, roll mat, sleeping bag and some more junk. ( I personally tend to load these first, as they are bits i want out first when i get to the camp site, but there is a school of thought to at least pack your sleeping bag seperate, in case you loose/have stolen your out bag, not ever heard of it happening in europe, but did hear once of it in russia).

The 89ltr dimensions when closed (filled full) are 71x40x40 cm. So have a rough measure up. Remember too, if you don't fill it full you can roll it down a couple more times to take up slack and make it even thinner, but there is a limit though due to the closing straps that go over the top.

For most people who have two hard panniers and a small rack on the back of their 1100 and 1150's and 1200s you can usually fit a 89ltr if you are two up, but its worth having a quick measure if your not quite sure.

Hope that helps.. John

thanks very much - ideal. Is it possible to collect one - him indoors wants an excuse to get away from me.. He'll probably phone you tomorrow or day after if he doesn't forget! We're only on Anglesey.

Collections..

Hi Issy,
Yes collection is fine, BUT arrival time must be agreed before hand please. But certainly collection shouldnt be a problem if your passing or out this way. I tend to be in most days and evenings on the whole and am pretty flexible with things.
The office number is 01244 549688 so drop me a line. If I am not in, or unable to reach the phone in time, you will probably get the answer machine I am afraid, give it a few mins and try again. I will probably be packing orders or working on something.

Glad I could help..

John

Cheers..

Issy, hope the bags are doing the trick for you.

NEW Colour now instock!
Yep, we now have the 49ltr rackpacks in grey, in addition to the red, yellow and black we previously did. We hope to have grey bags in the other sizes shortly.
