I use outlook for my emails (same computer / software / TalkTalk provider etc etc) for ages. Then 2 days ago noticed i was no longer receiving emails. Tried send email to my self and it appeared in the sent box but was never rec'd. Tried shutting down computer etc but when i reopen outlook it comes up error. Sometimes dialog type box appears saying "....error 0x800CCC92 your email server rejected login. Verify user name & password in your acct properties....". Even if i knew what to do i have no recollection of my user name & password. Indeed did i ever know it? Given nothing changed 'at this end' am wondering if the fault lies with the server????? Any suggestions before a silhouette of this computer appears in my front room window?

Have you tried getting your mail on your phone or another pc?
Also try to access the mail from a webpage (if possible)

Either will verify if server is working and if your password is valid.

Prob end up setting up a duplicate account on outlook - I presume you still have password and login details for your mail server!

Try login to your email direct via the web (not using your normal login via the computer icon). Check how full up your account is, there should be a %age box somewhere. Delete as much as you can. There should also be a setting somewhere to delete items automatically from the inbox after a certain time period.
You may be able to get some help on how to do this by phone from your ISP/email.

Each ISP has subtle differences but this "full up" situation is not unusual and not well explained.

who is providing the email address i.e. what is the part of the email address after @?

Were you previously a Tiscali customer that migrated to Talk Talk? If so, the Tiscali email address will die unless you import it to your TalkTalk account via their website email service. I did this a couple of months ago for a legacy Tiscali email address and this is still working fine to collect the emails via a process similar to outlook.

Some other providers have killed off legacy email addresses as well. I had a tesco.net one for many years after leaving them as internet provider but they wanted cash to continue it so I let it die. Others will only allow you to operate the legacy email via logging onto the website (they hope you will click on the banner ads).

Whatever has happened, if you do not know the password for the account then you may have to contact the relevant customer services. Try webchat as this is often much more effective than phoning. Hopefully, when you set up the account you enabled some sort of secondary security to aid recovery such as registering a phone no. or answers to questions like a memorable date or favoured teacher.

Many thks for the replies folks, now sorted. In case anyone is interested: I had recently changed my account password with my BB supplier and that had affected my ability to receive emails via Outlook; ie, the password for the BB supplier account must match the password in the Outlook account because otherwise the Outlook 'platform' stops working asap. Being dumb I hadn't realised they were related. Now if anyone happens to know how I can back-up my email addresses....

I do not use Outlook or any other client that stores emails locally on a computer that may go bang. I use Gmail (other platforms are available). I simply set up Gmail to import any emails from old email addresses in the same way Outlook will get them. These are then archived in the cloud. It's largely an archive of stuff bought online and hotels stayed in on trips bike trips which I can search very easily to remind me where I stayed or which shop I bought something.

My Outlook downloads to laptop (and main PC) - but Gmail also stores them all in the logical folders. So - always available, and a new machine if set up the same - will slowly sync if set to same. There is an annual cost for that in Gmail though.

what I like about Gmail is it works seamlessly across my laptop, Android tablet, personal phone and if needed, even my work phone if my personal phone loses signal (they are on different networks). Everything is synced in real time.

Anyone experienced difficulties with Outlook where the same settings that work on an Android phone, but not on a laptop.

Until mid Feb all was good and suddenly stopped working.
