Hello Folks...

New to the site and looking for some info...

Whats the difference between the standard GS overdrive and the adventure 6th??
Does the adventure cope with motorways ok.

I have had a test drive on a standard GS and liked the over drive but its an adventure i am after.

Hope someone can help...

cheers

GS 6th is an Overdrive gear, 4000 revs = 80 mph, the adventure has a slightly lower 6 th gear ratio, between 5th & 6th on a non adv gs and is by repute more useable and more tractable, the 2nd to 5th gears are the same on both versions, the 1st gear is slightly lower on the adv with the option of an even lower off road 1st gear.

If I had known when I bought mine I would have had the adv gearbox ratios.

HTH

I find the adv is ok on motorways as long us you stay around or below 85, mine seems a bit vibey between 85-95 and above that its fine:D

One other thing to consider is the type of riding you will be doing.
On our trip to the Balkans earlier this year Gavins Adventure used aprox 15% more fuel than my GS whilst making progress on the motorway/autobahn. Although consumption is about the same away from the motorway.

An expence worth considering if you do a lot of motorway miles.

Peronsally, I would love to have my bike with the Adventure 1st gear, and the standard GS 6th gear (overdrive).

I don't have an issue with downshifting out of overdrive to pass.

Overdrive

Adventure 6th gear is great and very useable upto 85mph as other posters have said, I don't tend to ride faster than that and also find at 6'3" that the airflow becomes uncomfortable anyway along with the vibes. I also love the 1st gear for coming down those wet ferry ramps and moderate off road.

I fell in like with my adventure on the first day I borrowed it as a 7 miles on the clock loan bike which I subsequently bought. I rode it the other day (tend to use my Dakar for going to work) and managed to clock 100 miles just going to work + nightschool (should be 25!). The tractability of the machine negates the lack of O/D and the 30L tank gives you 300 miles anyway.

Buy, ride, enjoy!

Ditto!

Some steep hill starts are just scary with the tall first gear, especially 2 up with luggage. But the overdrive 6th is perfect to just snick it into and all the vibes just vanish.

Overdrive 6th Suits Me!!

Hi Bandito,
I've had my '01 1150 GS since new and have now covered 50k. I have the o/drive 6th and have found it great - even 2-up with luggage the GS is so flexible and torquey that it pulls 6th gear easily even from lowish speeds/revs. I also know others who are not so keen and prefer the lower 6th, the slightly bigger step in ratios between 5th and 6th seems to upset them but I don't find it a problem and the o/drive makes for smooth, effortless and relaxed riding?
Getting back to your options. My understanding of things - this was prior to 1200 launch, so may have changed - was that with an Adventure you could either have the o/drive 6th gear with a standard 1st gear, or, standard 6th gear with a lower 1st gear, - but not both, ie. you can't have a low 1st and an o/drive 6th, - is this still the case? Check exact options with dealer, there may be more than you think? - they sometimes try to keep things simple for an easy life!! - so check
Anyway, I hope you can get things sorted and become a Gs'er!!, I stay just outside Dundee so if you want to meet up or get a bit more info then e-mail me or pm me or leave a message on the forum and we can arrange something.
