Good Day,

This is the Department of Homeland Security. We have a vital mission which is to secure the nation from the many threats as well as internet Fraud. This requires the dedication of more than 230,000 employees in jobs that range from aviation and border security to emergency response, from cyber security analyst to chemical facility inspector. Our duties are wide-ranging, but our goal is clear - keeping America safe.

By the way, your file just came across my desk, and we are happy to inform you that your funds valued at US$10,700,000.00 (Ten million Seven Hundred Thousand United States Dollars) have been approved by the Treasury Department of the United States.
Kindly get back to us for further directives.

Note: Do not reply to any e-mail that comes from the FBI Director. The FBI director does not e-mail people; He will rather send an agent to your door step in person. Do not fall a victim of scam again, a word is enough for the wise.

Thank you and have a good day.

i found this;

There are two ways that your ship can be tracked on its voyage. When it is close to shore, the AIS (http://www.navcen.uscg.gov/enav/ais/default.htm ) is in use. This an automatic system and is limited to only ships within radio range. When your ship is out in open water, you need to rely on WMO-VOS (http://vos.noaa.gov/vos_scheme.shtml). The problem with this system is that it is a voluntary one and not all ships participate.

Once you have determined the name of your ship there are various websites that offer you the ability to track your vessel. These sites are free and some only require you to register to get the most current updated information.

While your ship is in the North Sea, which includes the ports of Bremerhaven, Antwerp, Zeebrugge, etc., vesseltracker.com (http://www.vesseltracker.com/en/Home.html) provides up to a 2 hour delay of your ships position. This is an AIS based website. Free registration is required for this feature.
There is another AIS website, http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/ and it does not require registration.

After your ship leaves the North Sea on her way to the Atlantic Ocean, she passes through the English Channel. You can track her movements at http://www.ais-live.co.uk/ which is another AIS based website. This site is free, information is real-time and does not require registration.

Once through the English Channel, your ship begins her trans-Atlantic crossing. To continue tracking, you must cross your fingers and hope that your ship is one that voluntarily participates in the WMO-VOS program. If she participates, you can track her progress at http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/index.html. If you enter the ships name and can not pull up any reports, try entering her call sign.
This is a free site, information is usually updated 2 hours after a ship reports their position and registration is not required.
If your ship does not participate, figure that it takes 6-7 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean until you can resume tracking with the following website.

http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/ is a global AIS tracking service that provides real-time information. It can be used for ports all over the world. But remember, being an AIS service, your ship needs to be in range of shore to acknowledge it's position.

tonight i noticed an email from paypal informing me of an invoice for $425 for motorcycle insurance from "policy dog" a company i have never heard of never mind entered into an agreement with. the invoice is dated today due for payment tomorrow. i thought scam and logged onto my paypal account and sure enough it's there. i have cancelled it and have confirmation from paypal to that effect. it would appear that it is motorcycle express that is trying to get money from my paypal account without my permission. all i have ever done with them is get a quote. i have never signed anything provided proof of ownership of the bike as they require, nothing nadda zilch. i repeat i have not entered into any agreement with them never mind given them permission to invoice my paypal account. i am really puzzled by this and have sent motorcycle express an email asking them to explain themselves. good job i checked my emails and acted. i find it difficult to believe that a firm that Chris has dealt with before has tried to scam me and i have sent them an email asking them to explain themselves.

right, i now see that policy dog are the parent company of motorcycle express, something i didn't know, so that explains that side of things. when i saw the notification from paypal late last night i panicked a bit thinking it was a scam as i was not expecting an invoice from anyone let alone someone i had never heard of and went a bit ott. i have never received an invoice to my paypal account before so i didn't understand how it worked thinking that if didn't cancel it paypal would pay it today. i now realise that they probably would only pay it if i told them to. the thing is though, i have never mentioned my paypal account to them (motorcycle express) so how can they send an invoice to it? this is apart from the fact that i had never told them i was taking up the quote. strange. it looks as though there may be a difference in the way they operate to the way we do here. anyhow things will no doubt be clearer when i get a reply to my email.

I had an invoice through from them today requesting payment. I just e-mailed them back and told them I was using a different company.

I had a bit of a row with my bank the other night though. The other insurers had tried to take a payment using the credit card details I'd sent them and my bank rejected it as 'suspicious'. TBH I've no problem with that (in fact I'm pleased they're so vigilant) but they didn't contact me to explain what had happened. The insurers tried again shortly afterwards & the 2nd request was also declined by my bank.
Half an hour after that I got an automated text from an unknown no. telling me there had been 'suspicious' activity on my credit card and asking me to confirm a load of my account details via text message. A bit like Tony I suspected a scam so rang the bank who explained who the payment request had come from.
I confirmed that I was happy for the payment to go through (about£315) but did say that had they contacted me directly after the 1st request the second request could have been allowed to clear, thus saving everyone unnecessary grief.
I also questioned the use of text messaging to request confirmation of credit card details and was told '?that's how it is and it's not gonna change'.
I contacted the insurers who were fine about it, said it happens a lot with foreign customers and not to worry, they'll request payment again - though that has yet to happen.

If yours hadn't been requested yet it might be worth contacting your credit card company to give them the heads up that there will be a payment request coming through from Fermet Insurance of Winter Hill, Florida.

Thought I'd just check whether they'd taken payment for my insurance yet. I have gone down the Safe Trip Insurance route with Fernet. They've taken far more than they should have - nearly $100!

I've emailed them for an explanation!

good idea. i will be sorting my insurance with fernet in the next few days and will do just that.

has anyone got the breakdown insurance sorted yet?

I'll be doing that with Fernet as well. I asked them to do this when I applied for the bike insurance.

What's this ' Safe Trip Insurance'?

Edit: Do we know what hotel we're staying at in Vancouver yet? Arkela's original list said 'TBA'.

still TBA afaik.

i am at present putting the hotels in my sat. nav and have had to leave Vancouver out. my Sat Nav doesn't seem to know of a Dream Catcher Inn Valemount or it's address

http://www.dreamcatcherinn.ca/

You'll find the address on here.

Edit: That said I think my Nav V couldn't find the address so I plotted it by looking at Google Maps.

I had a play around with Base camp yesterday to try to pre-plan some routes. What a fecking ball ache that is! I gave up in the end and decided just to ask someone else with a Nav V who's already done it to share their routes with my Nav V.

i know the address but my sat nav doesn't. fixed it now by dobbing the map at about the location it shows on google earth and saving that. that said were not going to miss it as we are going right past the sign for it on our route and it's just up the road past the bridge. i like the eatery we will be passing, A&W where you can get mama burger-teen burger-root beer-chubby chicken-onion rings. sounds delish :D
street view is the dogs :bow

Tony,

Fernet took two amounts out of my account. One for the insurance and one for the breakdown cover. The figure for the breakdown cover was correct. Had to apply separately for this though - on their website.

I will send you the Dreamcatcher Inn tonight. Anyone else who wants the hotels (or my take on the whole route for that matter) PM with your email address and let me know if you want the route in Basecamp or Tyre and I'll send it across.

No point in us all committing to a massive amount of time doing the same research!:thumb2

so i presume the sum total they took was correct then. good.

if you have an update for the whole thing in tyre then by all means Andy, fire it across and thankyou.
i have given up with the open source maps and have got hold of a garmin micro sd card for my 660 with the full maps on it and it is much better. i was having issues with the other ones and thought oh. feck it let's have the proper gear :)

This is the reply I've just had from Fernet:

On our website (www.fernet.com) when you go to “overseas visitor”, then look at the instructions, you will see a statement that says we charge a $60 processing fee and a 3.8% cc fee. So this is why it is different. Hope this explains it ok for you.

What's that old adage about reading the small print?! Well I didn't!:augie
