The Panama Canal may have to limit the size of ships passing through the waterway because Central America is facing its worst drought in decades, lowering water levels from the lakes that feed into it.
The canal is the central plank of the country’s economy, and the threat comes at the end of a costly dispute over the expansion of the route, which celebrates its centenary this year.
Jorge Luis Quintano, the head of the Panama Canal Authority, said that his organisation might have to limit the passage of super-container ships by the end of this year or early next if the drought continues.
The region has been suffering a drought that meteorologists blame on the El Niño weather phenomenon in the Pacific.
The drought has led to the deaths of thousands of cattle. It has also dried up crops and forced cities to ration electricity because of failing hydroelectric stations and a surge in the use of air conditioning.
Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala have declared states of emergencies in the worst affected areas. The governments of El Salvador and Nicaragua have started funds to help afflicted farmers.
The timing is bad for Panama, whose 48-mile, lock-assisted canal is the lifeblood of a country created to accommodate it. Panama has spent more than $5.2 billion (£3.1 billion) to expand the waterway to accommodate a new generation of gargantuan container ships that mostly bring Chinese goods to America’s eastern seaboard.
The expansion, which entails deepening the canal by 1.2metres (4ft) and building two locks at either end, was already months behind schedule when a dispute erupted earlier this year with the Spanish-led construction consortium, which said that the work would cost $1.6 billion more than expected. By the time the dispute was resolved, the prospect of a drought was already overshadowing the project.
Mr Quintano said that he hoped for more rainfall in the wet season, from October to December, but that last November’s rains were the lowest in the canal’s history.
Nicaragua is planning to build a $40 billion canal of its own with the help of a consortium in Hong Kong.
Last week, Egypt announced an $8 billion upgrade of the Suez Canal, which could almost double its capacity to 97 vessels a day.

GS TROPHY 2014

It's just dawned on me that the final is taking place in Canada whilst we are out there. I wonder what the chances are we might bump into them?! Route seems to be a closely guarded secret apart from the fact that it's BC and Alberta.

During the fourth edition of the GS Trophy, which takes place from 6 to 14 September, riders will traverse well over a thousand spectacular miles through British Columbia and Alberta, taking in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains, crystal-clear lakes and waterfalls, snowy peaks, and deep impenetrable forests, home to moose and bears.

I've had a quick butcher's at the Breakdown cover & I appear to have been put onto plan 'B' by default. This only provides recovery of the vehicle up to 15 miles from the breakdown point. Given the miles we're going to be doing & the (I assume) swathes of emptiness we'll be riding through I wonder if 15 miles is adequate? Any thoughts Comrades?

I have e-mithered Fernet to see how much extra it would cost to go onto plan 'D' & if there any additional benefits in doing so, other than the increased recovery mileage offered.

On a seperate note I'm distinctly unimpressed with B.A..
Having spent £1200-ish on the return flight I went onto their website to see if I could pick my seats for each trip and it would appear that I can. At an extra cost of up to £80 return!
And I always thought Ryanair were the ultimate rip-off merchants.

It's a shame as I like B.A. but am unlikely to use them again in the future if Virgin Atlantic offer a realistic alternative.

i applied for my insurance and breakdown cover yesterday but got nothing back from them yet .
from what i read the recovery is to a destination of choice not just 15 miles and that was the $35 option :nenau

it would be nice if they would send an email acknowledging receipt of the forms.

we are going to check in online and see what seats we can get then. i like and usually ask for a window seat which when i get it is over a wing :blast but at least i get to see all the air brakes slats and flaps deploying which is always interesting (to me anyway) :D

I sent my forms on friday. I heard nothing so contacted them again on monday evening to see if they had recieved them. They hadn't. I resent and got acknowledgment yesterday that I would have everything through in 7-10 working days. I am also on plan B which as you say is a default plan. I'll leave it at that as I can't see the recovery driver stopping in the middle of nowhere and saying.... thats yer 15 mile son... get off!

i have payments to Fernet pending it appears so they are on with it.

yabut the driver may just want to charge you per mile from that point, or something :nenau

thing is though, as i said, it said in the blurb i read on the web page that it is recovery to a destination of your choice. i didn't see anything about 15 miles or a plan B. :nenau

I just paid for a recovery card as an extra - $34.95
I am on Plan B too

TOWING SERVICE: When a vehicle cannot be started, it can be towed to a destination of your choice by authorized towing service.

Maximum benefit allowed - Plan A=5 miles, Plan B=15 miles, Plan C=25 miles, Plan D=35 miles.

So pretty much not worth having at all then!!! If our collective knowledge isn't enough to get a bike running I doubt 'Lizard Lickin towing will do so. Better take some rope

i agree. i have packed on the bike a couple of extra straps which will do the job admirably if called upon and i know Chris is well prepared.
to be fair for the $35 (£20) it is a back up someone may just be glad of.

i presume that's on the info. you get from them when they send you the policy etc.
it would be good if they put it up on the website so you know what's what and can make your mind up.

Actually, didn't Tony say when we met at Manchester that he would carry enough spares for everyone's bikes AND that he was happy to be the Trip Mechanic?
