Pacific North West National Parks and Yellowstone.

Actually, didn't Tony say when we met at Manchester that he would carry enough spares for everyone's bikes AND that he was happy to be the Trip Mechanic?

it's Chris that is carrying the (BMW) spares like batteries, brake pads, final drive(s), shockers, abs units and, oh. yes, bulbs. :thumb2
KTM owners on the other hand will have to fend for themselves of course :green gri

i, of course, will be on hand to offer help, advice and assistance to those stricken enough to need it with my one size fits all hammer :D

It may be of interest that last year I had a problem in Glacier NP and the breakdown cover I had was useless, there was no phone coverage so the Rangers made a radio call to the breakdown insurance company for me ..... but they had closed for the day:mad:

Result: one missed last BBQ with the gang and $800 for a 250 mile recovery to the nearest BMW shop

Not sure I'd bother next time :augie

Edit: Check your rear wheel bolts after coming off the rough stuff ... DAMHIK

I will bring duct tape and WD40 then..

A complete tool kit really there Tony....

What - just burn the bike and say a bear ate it?

oh.dear, not good. that must have hurt

as for coming off the rough stuff; i don't intend going onto it on this trip.

I've just been double checking stuff and despite previously saying they would cover me to ride my bike in the US my bank travel insurance is now saying no!! Only have an enhanced account for insurance so that'll be stopped this week then:mad:

So, my question is...who are you using?

Sorry to rub it in but I'm covered on my wife's Building Society insurance (Nationwide).

is this travel or motor insurance? their travel insurance does not allow any licence points less than 5 years old.
(you already know that though as it has been discussed on here already).

post office for travel insurance here.

As most of them use Aviva you'd have thought there would be some consistency. I am covered on my bike abroad, but only if I ride it from the UK. As I can't get abroad without going on a boat or underground train I really can't see much difference with a 5 week cruise to America. I can't physically ride to either but I'm on my own bike when I get there. I had previously been told I was covered but TBH insurance companies will use any excuse to wriggle out of paying so probably not worth the risk anyway.

Post Office it is then. Thanks Tony

Which bank was that Steve? We're using TSB & they said we were covered... Underwritten by AXA when I last looked.
Will have to check again now....

First Direct. It's the interpretation of 'taking your bike abroad' that needs clarification. No such issue with the PO but I also have a Lloyds TSB account, might just have a look at that.

I've re-checked the TSB insurance & it still covers motorcycle riding providing you have the required licence & wear a helmet. The Post Office policy is very similar, probably slightly updated on TSB wording.....both underwritten by AXA. If you get the TSB Platinum cover, opt for the Winter Sports cover & you are then also covered for Glacier walking should it take your fancy as we ride past :thumb

Just scanned through the 'Gold, value added account' for Lloyds TSB, also by AXA and no mention of motorcycling as an approved activity. I'll ring em in the morning.

Having fallen into a crevasse on one of the Glaciers in South Georgia I can safely say that there will be no glacier walking on this trip!!!

i have received this from fernet insurance.

Tony,
Thank you very much for your question. It made us do some research and make a change to our web site. We were not fully aware of the limitations in the miles (my sister has American Automobile Association “Triple A” roadside coverage and has a limit of 5 miles for towing so we SHOULD have been aware that there often IS a limit, but honestly just did not think about it). We took our information off of a pamphlet that they sent to us, it was not clarified on that pamphlet. We have contacted our web master to make the adjustment in our information on our web site. I spoke with the company and found that the plan that we sell (yes, it is “Plan B”) has that limitation for mileage on it. The company would be able to give you (if you called for help) the approximate mileage and the approximate additional cost that might be incurred (the “average” overage charge nationwide is approximately $5.00 per additional mile). They would also make sure that they sent out a tow company that accepted whatever payment medium you might have in the event of an overage cost. I hope that clears it up for you, please let me know if you do not want the Roadside Assistance Policy since I have it scheduled to begin on 09/05/14 I will be able to cancel it if you do not want to keep it. I will have to do it fairly quickly so please let me know as soon as possible.

interesting to say the least.

$5 per mile could work out tricky here:
