Re insurance I'm still none the wiser as to what each package consists of. Do they all have breakdown cover? How much 3rd party cover is realistic in the land that invented litigation? What is everyone else getting?

Also re travel insurance, I have world wide cover with my bank (Aviva?), I've scrutinised the small print and it seems to tick all the boxes apart from the bit about riding motorcycles. I'm covered to ride my bike but can't hire a bike over 125cc, however the wording is obviously aimed at me riding my bike abroad having crossed the channel on it, not having it shipped 1/2 way round the world first. I have rung them and after several periods of being on hold (ask the grown ups) I've been told it's fine. I have a name but I know they will do anything to get out of paying a claim so Chris, Have you had any problems in the past??

I have travel insurance through the bank and it covers everything. Saying that, I'm always slightly dubious of anything the bank says so as a precaution, I take out other cover because you can never have enough in the US so I have a Post Office policy running as well. I've never claimed and nor has anyone else on one of my trips (to my knowledge) so haven't tested the process.

The bike insurance is a minefield but I always take a mid range policy. I've asked them many times to Anglicise it for us but it falls on deaf ears. You need the "insured against non insured drivers" as having no insurance is rife in the US especially in the back waters where we will be. The breakdown cover is next to useless because it only takes you 35 miles if I recall.........!! Again, I've never claimed and nor has anyone else but I have no doubt the system works well.

Bill, you will need to take a bit of Canadian for fuel and food. It's Ok at the border towns but they aren't keen further into Canada and they do, the exchange rate will be shocking!!

Cheers Chris. If they won't accept US dollars on a 1 for 1 basis I'll remind them that they're basically just the 51st state of the USA, that should clear up any confusion & put them in their place. :thumb

If I'm reading things correctly we'll be doing about 1,000 miles or so in Canada?
We have 5 nights but 1 of those is a day off.

On that basis I reckon I'll probably take about £450 worth of Candian Dollars. That'll give me £100 per day including fuel + £50 for scran on the day off.

Heads up on the insurance Comrades.
I e-mailed Evelyn today to give her the go ahead for my bike.

1) The minimum insurance period is 1 month so you may as well ask for 5th September - 5th October 2014.
2) The paperwork showed the higher price of $610.45 rather than the agreed price of $516.07
3) There is an additional 'service charge' of $60.
4) The bike model details were slightly incorrect - no surprise as I'm currently awaiting a call back from Hasting in the UK who have had 3 attempts to get the correct model & still can't get it right.
5) She's away on holiday from 8th June - 22nd so if you apply around that time expect a potential delay.

I've e-mithered her & asked her to correct the details, amend the price & queried the 'Service charge'. I imagine the 'Service charge' is a standard fee but it seems a little high & there was no mention of this on any of the e-mither exchanges I had with her earlier in the year.

Well, she's pretty insistent the higher price stands + $60 Service charge.
I've copied part of the original e-mail chain to her where she assured me the price for the highest level of cover would be $516.07.

Watch this space.

Yip. The new price is correct for those of us wanting the maximum level of cover.

Hi Robert,
There was a change in rate on April 1st,2014.

for the limits of $250,000 per person/$500,000 per incident and $100,000 property damage plus Comprehensive and Collision:
Premium: $610.45
Service Fee: 60.00
Total: US Dollars: $670.45

Even for people booking though Chris Biltcliffe, Unchained Tours?

Yes.

So in essence it's gone from £306.15 to £397.74 in the space of 3 months.
£400 for 3 weeks insurance? :eek::mad:

I only pay £105 for fully comp in the UK/Europe for 12 months.

I've had a good look round Tinterweb & it doesn't seem to matter which web site you go through all roads lead to Motorcycle Express, the people who have been quoting for Chris/us.

While I was searching Tinterweb yesterday looking for alternatives I thought I'd found a different company so put an application into them. It was only after it was sent that I got an e-mither telling me I'd hear from Motorcycle Express, the people who have already quoted us.
Interestingly enough I got the quote back from Motorcycle Express this morning, though from a different person. The price quoted is exactly the same as that quoted by the other lady I've been emailing who is aware we're coming as a group. It would appear that we're no longer getting the group discount, hence the price increase.

either that or they (Motorcycle Express) recognised your details and just sent what you already had :nenau

i will ask the question of them "are we getting a group discount still" when i contact them today.

I did ask the question and was assured that was the price for the 'Group discount', even though it was exactly the same as the 'non-group discount' price.

Be interested to see what reply you get.

Just being nosey...i went on a Bilco trip a couple of years ago, using Motorcycle Express for my insurance.
I paid $280 plus $60 service charge for the month but with much lower limits to keep costs down.
It looks like they sting you if you go for the max cover so if have a concern about cost,it may be worth trimming cover.
