Hi folks

I thought I had read somewhere on this forum, that some owners were encountering paint wear on the New GS 1300. My bike had done less than 500 miles when I noticed it had some showings of paint wear on the metal part of the tank, just below the tank fairing.

Are others encountering similar as BMW Customer service to say the least is probably the worse I have ever encountered and basically in denial like all issues I have had with the bike. I have owned several GS"s and RR's and never encountered any wear whatsoever, yet on this bike it has shown it with so limited miles. I personally don't grip the tank and I have only worn denims so not sure how this has happened with such low miles.

Would welcome to have some feedback on others experiences and how it was handle by BMW. Thanks in advance :):)

i wore through the paint on 1 of my CX500's ....

it did have over 100K on it tho' .

it is all down to cost cutting , and trying to make a profit , but it ends up costing more than the money saved , and ruins your reputation too.

BMW's are no longer a quality product.

Maybe fit paint protection film quickly after purchase? In the meantime I hope your dealer sorts it.

The was the plan but didn't expect wear to happen with such low mileage
I had problems with the paint on my 1250GS TE Exclusive tank side panel where my knees would touch the tank and like you didn't grip the tank with my knees. It was at a similar milage to you as I too pointed it out at the 1st service and it had black matt paint so couldn't be polished out. I successfully made a warranty claim and Cotswold got me a new panel. I had PPF appplied by Tony James design at the dealers but you can buy kits direct from him if you want to do it yourself. I kept the bike for another 4 years without any further marking up.

why should you have to do this ? did BMW pay for it ?
the paint never wore off of my 1150gs , and i bet it won't wear off the RT i got to replace it.

to show you how far BMW have sunk , even my California Metal still has the paint on the tank where my knees go , and that's Italian ! and it's done 100k

I added paint protection to the lower part of the tank and the upper most black parts. I put the Nippy Norman clear plastic covers on each side of my 1250GSA tank which were unnoticeable and stopped it getting marked.

A good question. I didn't have to do it but I chose to, though I wasn't that pleased it was necessary to do so to avoid the panel getting marked up again. Don't forget all manufacturers have been forced to switch away from 2 pack and other hard wearing paints to softer acrylic paint by the EU on environmental grounds.

People seem to forget it isn't manufacturers choice to use water based & acrylic paints which, as you say, isn't as hard as 2 pack paint. It's forced on them by regulations as 2 pack is highly toxic when it's being sprayed.
Easy solution to the paint wear problem is to stick protective film on area where there's contact.
Suppose it would be nice if BMW put protective film on at the factory. Maybe on next year's model ! :-) .

The paint back then was different , my CBC 1000 was around 50 k , not quite your high miles , but the paint was thicker , laceur thick as well and a quick T cut back to polished . Would be to scared to T cut a new bike now with the paint restrictions , bring back the 80s with its head spinning paint lol .
Now I just get them 3m coated , problem solved .

I wouldn't agree with you here this is not an EU issue, I have seen other bikes which have a better finish of paint and they are EU manufactures!

Well as it stands, right now I have had no support from my Dealer nor BMW Customer Service even though I have bought around 8 New BMW bikes from the same dealer over the course of 15 Years riding bikes, can't say I pleased so far with the outcome

Almost all bikes require extra protection for knee wear. BMW or your dealer are not going to repaint your tank or replace it with a new one. There's a ton of products out there to prevent this wear

Have you had the 1st service done yet? If not you may get a customer satisfaction survey to complete which is a good way of rocking the boat. If you have ask for the dealer priciple's email address and write to them. Be factual and polite as dealers have the ability to self authorise warranty work upto a certain amount (I don't know what it is but I had a free 1st service because of the delivery delays I experienced which the dealer offered me so it would have been rude to refuse it 🤣 )

I didn't mention EU.
Don't know where the ban of 2pack paint comes from. Looking at it another way, I suppose it's better if a few bits of paint wear through than paint sprayers suffer long-term health problems in the future from having to use it now.

Those are separate panels, very little cost to BMW and a few minuets to install.
This is true, though not knowing the construction methods of the 1300GS is the part of the tank the OP has problems with another panel too? Though IMO the cost to replace a faulty item is not really relevant as it's not fit for purpose as far as the consumer rights act 2015 is concerned and if BMW choose to construct something in a different way that then costs more to rectify then that's not a cop out for them?
