How much (if any) rear wheel movement is normal before the shaft drive turns ?

Can the bevel box connection wear ?

What would be considered to much play ?

and......can it be adjusted ?

Any insights/experience appreciated.

I’m not going to be much help to you I’m afraid it’s just that I too have a question about my Bevel Box
I have found a very small amount of lift in the bearing there is no noise and it feels OK when you turn it but I’m thinking the bearings need replacing but I can’t find out how to do it or if it can be done at home or if it’s a bit of a Dockyard Job

Any help would be great can anyone recommend someone I could send the bevel box to that could do the work

Thanks and sorry to Hi Jack your thread But I thought we could get all our questions answered in one go

Bevel boxes

There is usually a very small amount of backlash that can be adjusted by setting the preload using shims. The bevel drive needs special tools to strip the drive shaft out and a little bit of knowledge, there are several engineering shops around capable of doing this, whilst it's in bits it is often worthwhile to replace the bearings and oil seals. If you pm Mr. Steptoe I think he has someone in your part of the world that could help.

cheers,

Thanks for that I will send Steptoe an E-Mail

I think the bevel box must be about the only bit on my bike that’s still the original bit

It’s getting a bit like Triggers Broom 10 new handle and 5 new heads but still the same bike :)
