Guys, i'm looking for a little advice here or some suggestions. I've found myself in the unlucky position of having to get myself from Dublin to Newcastle to do a little work 3 days a week. Getting from Dublin to Newcastle is not a problem as ryanair fly there on the mornings that i need to get there. Unfortunately they don't fly back at any time that is remotely useful. Last week I got the train from Newcastle up to Edinburgh and caught a 10:30pm flight back to Dublin. Seven hours door to door. After looking at all the combinations of airports and times nothing really works.

So I have a new plan. The flights in and out of leeds work quite well but the trains don't so I was going to drive my bike over one week and then leave it in Leeds airport when I fly home from Leeds on a Thursday and then pick it up again on the following Tuesday on my way up to Newcastle. So if no one has any better ideas, does anyone know if its safe to leave a bike in Leeds airport for 5 days at a time and is there better places than others in the airport to leave a bike?

I always used to chain my bike to the nearest immovable object and according to this you're still allowed to. there used to be a signpost at the entrance to the old shortstay (now the drop-off area) on a section of pavement that went nowhere that I parked behind and just ran my chain through the frame and around the post.

could leave it at sentinel secure parking wihich is 5 min from airport and does a mini bus their and back

I nipped in to the terminal recently, leaving my bike in the drop off car park (You are allowed 10mins free) After about 8 minutes I was stopped by an attractive woman selling MBNA credit cards. It took me a few minutes to get away and when I tried my ticket in the barrier machine it wanted me to go pay. No problem, I just ducked to one side and went round, it did look to be causing a lot of trouble to the bloke in the car after me. There seemed to be no way to get in and out without passing the barriers, I have read the Airport parking web site but I think you would have to argue the point with an official if the barrier sides have been altered. It would be best to print out the article and get clarification before you leave it so long.

I always use Sentinel for the car. Nice people to deal with and very efficient. Worth a phone call to see if they do a cheapo rate for bikes.

now then

if your stuck i live 10 mins from the airport, would cost £10 in a taxi to get from mine to the airport, you could lock your bike to the side of me garage for a few days if you needed somewhere safe!!

Guys,

Thanks for all the suggestions, really appreciate it. My slow response is due to all the time I spend travelling and working and being too tired to turn on my computer. I'm going to experiment this week with getting the train to Manchester and flying from there. The train sorta links up with the flight times to Dublin, provided I run quickly from the train station in the airport to the terminals. If this doesn't work, I'm back to the bike option. I don't know for sure yet but it could be a six month work engagement so I'm looking for a way of doing this with the least amount of pain.

I'll let you know what happens this week.

Cheers,
Colin

I live in Harrogate, about 10 minutes from the A1 and about 20 minutes from L/B airport. There's room in my garage for another bike (in fact, now the ElectraGlide's gone there's room for a feckin' combine harvester :D)
Let me know if you're stuck for somewhere.
