Sorry about the news Pastyman. What exactly does inoperable mean? Everything is operable insofar as you can go in and cut stuff out, only problem is that sometimes there is as much risk ( or even greater risk)of leaving patient severely incapacitated or even dead as much there is of giving a 'cure'. I'm sure your brother has already looked into the weighing up of odds and I'd hate to be giving false hope but don't take 'inoperable' as really being inoperable unless you've done the research. I've known instances whereby something 'inoperable' in one hospital can be seen as 'operable' somewhere else. Take care.
