Hi folks
I'll be heading from Harz area in Germany to Krakow (800km) and am looking for somewhere nice to stay to break the journey about midway: I'll probably be crossing the border near Gorlitz (I think).

This is an all time record: planning next year's trip as early as August...I normally start around Christmas. Sad. :)

Any suggestions gratefully received.

From Krakow (incl. Auschwitz) I'll be heading to Gdansk, Berlin, back to Harz and home. Again, any ideas of things to see, places to go all gratefully received.

Did this road 2 weeks ago,4.5 hours will have u in Krakow from Dresden, new motorway all the way and everyone is 20 kphs above the limit, very quiet road in the evening,There is a f1 hotel in Dresden if you want to break there and its real close to the motorway
If your staying in Krakow make sure you visit the salt mines and the mazury region [lake district] in the northeast is very nice,The wolfslair hitler bunker is also in this region near Ketrzyn

Enjoy yourself and good luck,im home a few days and i could go back tomorrow:beerjug:.
avoid the main road from Poznan to Berlin as the roadworks, truck convoys and truck ruts make it a nightmare, rest of roads i encountered were fine, wee country roads wer quite good

You could try going slightly north of Gorlitz and stopping in Zagan. Just south of the town is the remains of Stalag Luft III:

Well worth a visit, we spent a few hours there wandering around the camp last month, I could have spent all day. There's a small museum which we didn't visit (closed Mondays!) but there is enough information in the woods where the remains of the camp are on sign boards to keep you occupied.

We stayed in a very nice hotel just off the town centre - not especially cheap but good value considering the quality of the place.

Zagan itself is nothing particularly special, but does have one or two interesting little features :D

Thanks, folks: great recommendations and advice. Much appreciated. Poland doesn't (yet) seem to be a regular Tosser destination so I wasn't sure I'd get anything back. (Perhapos there are reports but "Search" very definitely wasn't my friend). Just had a couple of days in Krakow (flew there). Great place and want to go again. Salt Mines (and Auschwitz) now definitely on the plan. Hadn't realised I'd be passing so close to Great Escape country. Ta.

Anybody know whether Gdansk would be worth the effort (or should I stay in the South)?

Cheers

Hey
I got married last month and part of our honey moon was a little tour of europe. we stayed in a hotel in Auschwitz: hotelgalicja.com.pl. Fantastic place, dedicated garage for the bikes, and 10% discount for bikers. Its got a spa etc and cost us £56 a night!!

From there we headed west to prague, stayed there a few nights then went direct to Berlin.

PM me if u want to know any more!

Agreed. I've stayed at the Hoel Galicja myself. It's only a mile from Auschwitz and IIRC approx 1 hours ride from Krakow.

Very impressive and good value for money. :thumb2

Watching this thread with interest. A few of us are off to Krakow next year en route to Romania.

That's good to hear - 8 of us are catching the ferry over from Hull this Thursday - riding east to Colditz area & have booked in at Hotel Galicja for a couple of nights for end of August - then on to Zacopane (?) back up to Sweden over to Denmark & back via Rotterdam. - hope the weather's good !!

The owner is a biker himself. When we stayed there in 2006 he let us put the bikes in the garage ... but no cars.

That's the kind of hotel owner I like. :D

IIRC Jaq Chirac (the former French President) has stayed there too, so you won't be slumming it.

Great stuff. Thanks for the information; I'm getting excited already :-)

Does anyone have a map reference for Stalag Luft III? I can't find on Mapsource or even Google Maps...I'm not sure whether the Museum I Googled at St. Lotników Alianckich 6
68-100 Zagan is the actual camp. Can you can wander around the location rather than just seeing stuff in an indoor museum?

we did the trip two weeks ago and stayed in the Harz mountains Hotel Villa Theresia

Tannenweg 6, 37441 Bad Sachsa, good hotel and a nice town

we then rode to Krakow and stayed in a nice hotel right in the centre called the
Hotel Wyspiański

Krakow a great place and well worth a visit but a long ride on the bike, we stuck to A roads and they were rough and slow,
We then rode through the Tatre mountains into Slovakia then over to Brno on route to the Austrian Alps,Germany and home a great tootle out
