Bike only 2 weeks old, out for ride and ride into plastic bag which sticks all over exhaust pipe and lander sensor. Most of molten mess whipes off while pipe still hot, but now there is a burnt stain on the pipe, does anyone have a solution for cleaning the mess off without marking or scratching the chrome, or should i do nothing and eventually it will disappear?

Cheers

Yes, get most off with a GENTLE scrape then use Autoglym metal polish. I keep my chrome looking new using this. You can use wire wool for stubborn bits but go carefully. G:)ood luck old chap!

I wouldn't use wire wool as it is likley to leave a lot of very small scratches.

Solvo Autosol was always the ultimate chrome cleaner.

It was available when I had BSA Starfires, Honda 400/4's, 550F2's and such like and can still be bought today.

Its what the classic buffs use to polish up chrome.

Its very slightly abrasive so if you use it extensively it does actually wear the chrome away.

You will have to remove the bulk of the plastic, but this is the stuff for the final polish.

Trust me on this one:D:D:D......................get exhaust hot..........buy a wee bottle of acetone from Boots................pour a wee drop on a very thick rag so you wont burn yourself........... soak and rub affected area...........with any luck the plastic residue might even come off as one big scab.........! Used this method many many times..............no scratch marks!!!!!!

Not sure if it will disappear eventually, but I got a black bin bag welded onto my headers about 6 months ago and some of it is still there now. It still smells a bit when hot, but not much. So, if you want to get rid of it you will have to get the cleaning products out, otherwise just scrape off the worst when hot and live with it.

acetone - chemical composition which dissolves 'various' substances and evaporates readily at room temperature, and catches fire very easily.

Vinegar - weak-ish acid (acetic, if the old brains still working)

Nail polish remover - can often be primarily acetone.
