Please reply if you have had corroded parts replaced under warranty

Was I bitching?

I think so, yes.

You were also implying very strongly that you are the kind of guy to keep smiling when he notices that he's munching in a shit sandwich. If you are willing to accept that "bikes corrode", and so to excuse the smelly brown filling, well, it's your bike, so no-one's stopping you. Don't expect, though, the rest of the world to just shrug when they thought they'd ordered the caviar, and instead found that it was dog eggs and horse apples.

OK then northernTwat, show me where in the BMW brochure it states "our bikes never rust"

Hypocryte I may be, dreamer I am not.

Do you demand so imploitely that people do what you want in real life, or just when you are stamping your little feet in the internet?

I do hope that you don't speak to your wife like that...

From the slang expression having one's head up one's ass, thus, wearing the ass as a hat. The term is extended to people who are clueless or bumbling, who don't understand what is going on.

I've just found that who ever uses the word 'asshat' or knows the meaning of asshat is infact an arse hole in good old imperial insults, can't at least one part of my life be in plain speach, yergetme

Moving back to the original topic...................:augie

Last year I had a 2008 12GSA and the wheels were exhibiting corrosion, as were the rear subframe/fasteners etc

In fact the 9 month old and 6500 mile bike was in a worse corrosion condition, than the 13 year old 1996 model 21,000 mile R1100RT I bought to replace the 12GSA

Add in the mechanical woes and niggles, the thought of being left stranded with FPC or EWS failure and owning a 12GSA was a worse ownership prospect than any of my previous bikes

Show me where in the BMW brochure  it states "the Sale of Goods Act does not apply to our motorcycles"??? :nenau

I don`t quite understand the point of this thread apart from giving unhappy owners a chance to say "my bikes got more corrosion than yours".

I love it when the "Sale of goods act" and the other old favourite "not fit for purpose" gets dragged out because it`s just not relevant here.

Nothing is perfect and any manufacturer will have some problems with some bikes etc. All they have to do is fix or repair it and in my experience BuMW are better than most in this respect.

I`m more than happy with my 45,000 miles GSA which goes on and off road, lives outside and gets used all year round. Sure, it`s got a bit of corrosion in places but I`m happy to sort it by my own means because IMHO that`s what owning a bike is all about. Doing what needs doing and not bitching about it.

My advice is to go to the manufacturer if you have a problem, get what you can done under warranty and then go home and spend a nice couple of afternoons in the shed, sorting the rest out yourself. How hard is it just to sort the offending areas with a bit of wire wool and hammerite?

Maybe then, you can actually get the beast out and ride it like it was designed to do instead of worrying yourself into an early grave about a spot of rust.

I have just found out that anyone who calls others an arsehole for no good reason is in fact the king of arsehole's.
Anyway, back on topic...
I do agree with the last reply which puts much into perpective about bikes needing TLC and that most fixes can be carried out by the owner with hammerite and wire wool. I will do this as I am confident that I can do a better job than the fitter at Bumw. The bit I cannot come to terms with is that the aforementioned German bike people are putting out expensive bikes with a similar standard of finish that Fiat used to use during the 80's. They have sorted this out it would appear. Why can BMW not do the same?:rob
..and please no excuses re water based paints.. EU rules..blah..

I think you will find the original post was about a 6 month old bike which was rusting and corroding, which makes the Sale of Goods Act very relevant here.

You may find that rust and corrosion is acceptable on your old 06 plate, but on a 6 month old bike.......your avvin a laugh. Do you honestly think its acceptable to pay £12-13,000 for a brand new bike, and then spend your own spare time repairing the rusty and rotten bits on your bike that the dealers and manufacturers have known about, some for several years, and should have eradicated through their own QC processes. FFS. Wire wool and fcuking hammerite.......... next youll be telling us that BMW never had a problem with EWS rings and FPCs, or is that just "what owning a bike is all about" in your opinion? If you pay tuppence and buy an old bike, then you takes your chances rusty shit and all, but if it comes straight out of the dealers brand new, then thats a different story all together.

Simple really............. they are getting away with it because some owners dont take them to task on it, or being fobbed off with bullshit, or the ones that think "thats what owning a bike is all about".

Sorry but I have not read the full thread but the question was have we had any parts replaced due to corrosion...

2007 R1200GS
The front engine cover had a small blister but Cooper BMW (Sunderland)changed it no questions asked, great service.:thumb2

Hope this helps,
Chris.

Yep, back on original topic - I had the filler cap surround and front engine casing replaced under warranty, just before it expired (warranty was 24 months at the time).

No real issues since then, apart from the fact that I've noticed is that I seem to have worn away the paint from the frame near the LHS front footpeg - but I think that's because my left boot rubs it there - something to do with my riding style perhaps ...

... Nothing is perfect and any manufacturer will have some problems with some bikes etc. All they have to do is fix or repair it and in my experience BuMW are better than most in this respect. ...

I have no idea if my bike has 'more corrosion than yours' 'cos at the moment it's covered in a coat of crud that has stuck quite frimly to the coating of AFC 50 I gave it after my corrosion warranty claim ... prior to this I was using only FS 365 ... since, I have been using both.

Anyhow ... for the record, regarding corrosion issues: I had the gearbox cover replaced, the final drive housing, and I'm on my third rear wheel (which is secured to the hub with black bolts, not silver-coloured ones).

All have been dealt with without fuss and in a most professional manner by my dealership (Bahnstormer :clap ).

The front wheel is showing some signs of corrosion around the hub bolts, and the engine bars are looking a bit rust around the tube junctions ... so I guess they are rusting on the inside ... so these may have to be done before the warranty expires in November ...

I'm inclined to think that customer service has something to do with how one approaches these things – and here I am not, repeat not, suggesting that any posters on this thread have been anything other than polite in their dealings with their dealer :augie

I would also like to say, that no matter what, none of the issues I have had with the bike have ever detracted from pride of ownership or enjoyment I have riding it ... I ride it all year round and look after it reasonably well ... but as I said, she does need a good clean just now.

I love this bike ... it feels like a marriage – so that's bound have a few ups and downs :D

I had my front engine cover replaced under the original warranty. My dealer spotted it underneath the plastic cover during a service operation.
I have just noticed that this one is also beginning to deteriorate at the base of the plastic cover too. Bike is due for a service in a few weeks, so will mention it to them then. I'll report back on the response I get.
