Hi All,

I'm disappointed to report that I had a crap collection experience of a 2026, 2000 mile R12 G/S on Saturday from a mai. dealer. I will post the email that I have just sent the dealer but would be interested to hear your thoughts / comments. I'm not sure of the rules on here so won't name the dealer.

Hi XXXX,

It was the most interesting ride for all the wrong reasons. After leaving the dealership I rode straight up to the xxx to get home and about half a mile after joining the xxx the fuel warning light came on and said I had zero miles of range , I’d covered less than 4 miles since collecting the bike. As the bike wan’t familiar to me I genuinely had no idea whether it genuinely had zero miles of range or had a reserve capacity so I slowed right down and came off at the next junction to check my phone for the nearest petrol station and rode there as slowly as possible waiting to run out. It was a shit situation.

To be completely frank, I’m not sure how to feel about all of this. You had 2 weeks since we agreed the deal to prep the bike and I’d already made it very clear in my email to you that I was disappointed that the bike was dirty when I first saw it.

Two weeks to the day later, the bike had been ‘cleaned’ by someone who clearly didn’t care, it was still grubby everywhere. See the photos below, it was dry when I rode home so this was all on the bike when I collected it.

The oil was not only low, it was not even showing at the bottom of the sight glass, even accounting for the engine not being warm, it was still too low hence your workshop needed to top it up.

Then I have to deal with the potentially dangerous situation of a fuel warning light on a dual carriageway with no hard shoulder less than 4 miles from leaving the dealership.

I don’t want to be writing this email, I really enjoyed meeting you and want to maintain a relationship but my abiding thought is that this feels like a ’trade’ sale. I know fuel has gone up but surely you could have ensured it had half a tank.

I could go on but hopefully my point has landed, I will leave this with you to decide what, if anything, your are prepared to do as a gesture to show that you agree that this wasn’t how my experience should have been. (PS I don't want a free valet, I will clean the bike myself)

I can’t get past the irony that my R1300GSA that I traded in to you was immaculately clean, the oil was on maximum and it had over 100 miles of fuel range left in it.

Regards

The oil being low would be my main concern. But they apparently topped it up.The bike being a bit dirty I probably wouldn’t have noticed. It’s a bike not an ornament. The fuel I would have checked as I left the showroom, as mine was, had it been low I would have asked where the nearest fuel station is. As for handing your old bike over with the oil on maximum, I am under the impression that it should be in the middle. Maximum is apparently as bad as minimum.
We are all different and have different expectations from dealers. The only concern I would have had would have been the oil being a bit low. They did top it up though so all’s good.

Not sure how I could check the fuel, it doesn’t have a fuel gauge, if you lift the cap you look straight onto a metal plate so can’t see into the tank

You are easy to please 😂
I think the point of a min/max is that anywhere between min and max is good to go.
I would expect a 2nd hand bike being sold to me to be very clean on pickup.
I would expect at least half a tank of fuel, the g/s doesn’t have a fuel gauge so you would need to open the tank and give it a shake.
Sounds like the customer had to raise the issue of low oil, so the dealership would have let him ride away with oil below the minimum. Pretty shoddy by my estimation, but guess we are all different with expectation.

In which case I would have gone to the nearest filling station and topped it up. Just to be sure. My old DR doesn’t have a gauge so I always top it up when setting off on a ride. I don’t know how far it will go on a tank so tend to refill it around 150 miles.
Don’t let the handover put you off your new bike. Fill it up, ride it and repeat.
What did you get by the way? Pictures would be good.

Glenn, we are not talking about what was once an oily rag bike shop. I’d be disappointed in this scenario. Millions is spent on marketing and if the brand promise doesn’t meet reality that will hurt them sooner or later. Better to put things right and quick.

I bought my 2022 GSA last year. It didn't have much petrol in it but I was buying a bike from them not petrol, it wasn’t particularly clean and shiny but it a bike and would have been dirty by the time I got it home anyway. As I said we all have different expectations from dealers. I was happy enough with my experience.

So would I. But why wasn’t that raised with the dealer during collection along with the fuel level? JJH
The dirty bike and oil was raised during collection, I didn’t know about the low fuel until after I left hence the email to them this morning.

Spending a huge chunk of money on a bike from a (I presume) main dealer, I'd expect it to be spotless. If you had already mentioned its state when purchasing, you really should have gone over it with a fine toothed comb on collection and made the 'it's still dirty' comment there...not after you'd ridden it 10/100 miles home. The fuel issue is typical and no dealer should send a bike off with the chance of the fuel light coming on...even in todays £8 a gallon days...shove a fivers worth in AND tell the buyer that it'll need filling up ASAP. Low oil is a warning sign to me. Feck me, all they need to do is have a look at the handily placed little sight glass and put 200 mil in...what else didn't they bother with ?

I did raise the dirt and oil with them as part of the collection process and I had a ‘door closed’ conversation with the manager. He agreed they’d cocked up. My email to them this morning was in response to the salesman emailed me this morning to ask how my ride home had gone.

Realistic is the correct word. It’s a bike not an ornament. I’ve since had a small warranty issue and it has been sorted out quickly and to my satisfaction whilst the bike was in for a service. They did give it a wash but I wouldn’t have been bothered if they hadn’t. I don’t tend to clean it much myself.
The OP moaning about his new bike being slightly low on oil but not being bothered that the one he was trading in was over full smacks of double standards a bit.
