Poor Quality Paint Finish

Spot on! Take a look at your car's brake caliper's or discs, or any part underneath - salt will kill anything!
My Last bike was a Honda, and it suffered just the same as the GS, if not looked after!

Scottoiler FS365 or ACF50 is the only way any bike will survive a British winter with it's looks intact!:thumb

Just looked at the front callipers of my 04 SEAT and the bolts are less rusty than on my bike and the car never gets washed after every trip.

Just finished conversation with BMW customer services and the result is " the bike hasn't been looked after adequately" and "as it's not a component that's corroded, but general corrosion" stick it where the sun don't shine.

Seems like there's Good un's and Bad un's :augie

Not much comfort if you get the crummy one :comfort

But of course the UK is a market for BMW, and the bikes should be durable enough to do well here...

Do you think that BMW have two production lines building GS's then?

Send all the shit ones to the UK and keep all the best stuff for the rest of the world?

Maybe I got a rest of the world bike or maybe I just take a bit more care than some? :nenau

You can run a car all year round and never wash it (if you so choose) and it won't corrode,
I agree that BMW bike finish could be better but are we really saying our cars don't corrode.

The paintwork on my car is pretty good - but I don't sit on it, rub my boots on it, etc. Take a wheel off to change the brake pads and its a different story. The calipers are 100% rust, as is most of the hardware around them. Much worse than the brakes on my GSA.

The main difference with cars is we don't see the corrosion but on bikes everything is on view.

I agree that stainless bolts wouldn't bankrupt BMW - But I don't think they intend an Adventure bike to look pretty forever!

I think some of you should "come out" and get the Harley you really want!:augie

:ymca2

Mine is nine months old - 4300 miles - ridden to work every day through snow and shine, washed regularly and ACF50 once a month. The left hand cyclinder head is already well on its way, and there are couple of spots here and there.

It'll be in soon and we'll see what the verdict is. If no warrantee then it's off to Small Claims. At least there I can put forward my case, present the evidence, let the facts come out and not have a high priced mouthpiece bury me in legal waffle. People should simply stop taking sh*t from big organisations.

Now spreading the word on Twitter

If people spent as much time looking after their bikes instead of bitching and moaning on here, you could get round the issues.

Feck me, we ALL know the finish isn't as good as it used to be and all the complaining on here, getting a group of angry customers together or posting on twatter is going to get you nowhere at all apart from up the noses or everyone else. BuMW just hide behind the you didn't clean it right argument and you are feckin stumped....end of story.

FFS, a few bolts are rusty. Give Steptoe a call and for a few drinking vouchers, he'll send you a nice bag of stainless bolts.....problem fixed! If there is a bit of paint flaking on the frame or engine, pop down to Halfords, grab a can of Hammerite and bingo, no more problems. Hardly feckin rocket science is it:nenau

I'm not a BuMW apologist but a realist. I've had a few corrosion issues with my 56 plate but I've done something about it myself and not bitched like a girls blouse. Do something about it yourself is my advice vote with your cash an go and buy a Suzhonkwakduc if you think it's better.

The bike is there for riding and half the fun of ownership is the garage fettle.....

Phew.......and breathe..........and drink:beer:

....and small claims will say what do you think??

What does 'washed regularly' mean? :nenau

Just accept the fact that the bikes are great, the price is high and the finish is shite. BMW is just another profit making organisation, no different than any other and they will give you the minimum for the maximum. So premium price, minimum quality to achieve it. Thank fuck I'm retired. I did exactly the same for years, even started to believe my own PR. If you're not happy buy a ???? Still can't understand why German cars can withstand the elements and bikes can't

I could publish my experiences but I'd probably get banned

If you mean tales of woe - the only things I've heard of are the mysterious ST1300 weave which I tried to simulate over 28,000 miles and never achieved (very disappointed :comfort ) and the early FJR models inlet valves doing impressions of the crocodile in Peter Pan.
Never heard of a shaft drive destroying itself on either bike, or popping the RH piston, or electrical problems, or fuel pump gizmos, so either one would give me a head start, and I know the ST13 is an excellent tourer, if a bit on the heavy side.
