Hi all,

Got a new set of PR4 Trail tyres fitted to my GS TE yesterday. Got up to speed on the way home and it's got a handlebar wobble at 50mph +. The shop are saying they have never had to send a PR4 back and if it's in balance which they swear it is, I'll have to buy ANOTHER front whilst they send it back????

Anyone had this issue? Feels awefull to ride.

They state it's not a balance issue and say they will send the tyre/s back. This must be an admission of 'not fit for purpose' in itself.

Surely it's the tyre dealer's responsibility to replace fresh tyres on your bike at no further cost,
then reclaim new ones from the manufacturer/supplier.

You would have thought so. They say its normal policy that the manufacturer only reimburse them once the tyre is proved to be faulty, but why should i be out of pocket rather than the tyre fitter or Michelin ?? I have to pay 'cost price only' for a new one and wait weeks for reimbursement.....

They re-balanced it, removed all those little rubber bits that stick out of a new tyre and said get 100 miles on it. I can only test it out of London so I won't know until i head home later, but i can't see how scrubbing it in would help. Its not like I'm a new customer, I've been going there for years and they are a good company.

I might be being a bit thick as my knowledge is limited in this area but surely if it was a fault with the tyre causing a wobble then the balancing should have masked it. Doesn't this have to be a balancing issue?

Your contract is with the shop that supplied the tyre, not with Michelin. Get them to replace it, it's between them and their supplier.

thanks guys, its actually really pissing me off now, that i didn't challenge what they were saying this morning, as its quite obviously unreasonable for me to pay for a second new front tyre. What if michelin don't find a fault and it was actually fitment issue!! Anywhoo, FWR are normally great, so I'm sure they'll fit a new tyre FOC if its still the same after a ride out tomorrow.

Another reason to stick with a main dealer for tyres. A good one will price match a local tyre fitter.

Ok your saying 50+ mph on fresh tyres correct! Just how fast where you going? Every time I have tyres fitted Cotswolds say first 100 miles take it easy and let the tyres bed in and settle down then drive as you normally do or are they wrong.

Taking it easy for the first 100 miles or so is to get rid of any releasing agent and to scrub the tyres before cornering hard NOT riding in a straight line, as for the dealer saying go out and do 100 miles to see if it settles that is a load of bollocks.

If a tyre is faulty (or out of balance) at 0 miles it will still be faulty 100 miles later and will never improve.

I've had a couple of faulty car tyres over the years which although they would balance on a machine once being driven they showed to have a fault in the carcass which caused a wobble.

On both occasions the tyre dealer immediatlely replaced the tyre at no cost to me

It's crazy to suggest you pay for another one. I use FWR and they have always been good. Go back and ask them to replace it FOC I suspect the guy you spoke to earlier had a hangover.

so frustrating. spent over 4 hours on Saturday back up to FWR from Guildford. I'll spare the gory details, but all i got out of it was my old front tyre put back on. So, now i have one new rear PR4 mismatched to my old Anakee 3 front tyre for £240.....

They are sending the front back to Michelin, then if its faulty i will finally get a new front. If the tyre is fine who knows! Which ever way i went (new anakee 3 for the rear, keep the old front tyre OR new pr4 for the front and keep the new rear pr4) i was going to have to pay AGAIN... then...hopefully.... get my money back at a later date. I don't like it one bit, but hey ho. I didn't want to spend any more money, so the old tyre is back on the front. OH and no wobble.....

Next time you need tyres, speak to Darren at Vines. Mention me, and this thread, and he will look after you.:thumb

Tyres are weird

Had a Tourance EXP, with a 40-50mph wobble for 5000 miles on one of my GS's - lived with it (just put more air in it and upped pressure)

Took it off when the rear wore out and put to Conti TA2's on the bike

Kept the tyre as it had 3mm on it

Refitted to my other GSA, as that tyre had worn out (i'm from Yorkshire:D) last friday

Went out yesterday on it, no wobble at all?

50/40/30/20 - hands off bars - not an glimmer of a wobble

Weird

Only thing I can say, if you get a wobble on front, with a new tyre (and I've had a few in 20 years on GS's:blast) - just up the pressur from stock 36psi up to say 40 or 42/44/46 - until it goes and it will

Running a front at 42/44 psi has been fine for me, wet or dry
