Has anyone here changed their grips. Mine have heated grips but surely you can change the rubbers for Pro-Grip for instance 
Sadly the heating element is within the rubber grip

Best thing I did was fit grip covers - Griptek or Grip Puppies. Work great.

I guess it's the "Large" option for the R1200GS.
I may get a pair myself or a throttle rocker as I get pain in both hands whilst riding.

Checked a few forums and looks like it's the "Small" option for GS, "Large" for Harleys etc that have bigger diameter grips as standard.

I did read a while back that someone cut up pushbike inner tubes and slid them over their worn grips to refresh them and extend the life

I have recently had Grip Puppies fitted to my 2007 GSA and they are great. The heated grips still work fine 'through' the puppies and they make the grips comfortably larger.
Surprisingly enough it ISN'T the large that are required but the standard or small size (can't remember what they called it now). I queried this when I received them from Sporttouring but they said that the small were OK for the GSA and much to my surprise they were right and very helpful.
On the order you have to stste the model of bike and they send out the correct ones.

Is the heat not reduced considerably, or at least takes longer to heat up ?

No - may take a little longer to 'permeate' - but the advantages of a larger grip esp for those with big hands and the comfort of cushioning vibes is worth any small compromise. Give them a try, they rock.

My mate put heated grips on his KTM SM and they`re noticable thicker than mine on the GS.

Ordered a set this afternoon, went for small, but they didn't ask anything about which model the grips were for.

They are definitely small................as i said I was surprised and e mailed the company back after they had been delivered to me to question the size but the chap confirmed small were the correct ones and large were for Harleys etc.
He was right.
Much more comfy and provide a greater handful (if you get my drift)

Another alternative is to use 31mm ID 'O' rings, either 5.6mm (which you may find a bit thick unless you have big hands) or 3.5mm thick obtainable from any good engineering supplier either 22 per side for 5.6mm or 32 per side for 3.5mm. (look in my previous posts for pictures) work well and are easily replaceable. Heated grips still work but a little slower!
