I’m quite smitten to be honest
I’ve got quite a bit of old Japanese stuff
My k1200r
But this is a bit more friendly than my r 1150r
Just got to get to the bottom of why it’s running so rich and backfiring on overrun it nice run
The joys

@Reevo

Which is it? The R1100GS you were asking about or a K1200R now??

For 580, 1100,1150GS The Black box on the left side throttle body sets the initial fuel setting

Have a look for setting "Throttle position sensor" or "setting TPS BMW R1150" ( there are probably more answers for this!)

If it has been Kicked or knocked badly its either damaged or faulty and if the ECU thinks the throttle is more open than it is it will inject more fuel than needed OR as Ste[toe says there is a CO potentiometer on the Eaelier ones

Oh sorry on about my 1100 gs
It’s been stood for 4 years
Yep, rich running on these closed loop bikes is often caused by the cat code plug being missing or the mixture potentiometer going AWOL... The cat code plug is in the fuse box under the seat, square plastic, colours may vary. The mix pot is by the rear mudguard under the back seat and was used instead of having a lambda probe on UK spec 1100's. If you start with the plug in the fuse box as for a while it was popular to remove them to make it smoother at low revs but with probs like you report, rich running, backfiring and a slower drop on the revs with the throttle closed ("revs hanging"). Take a pic of the inside of the fuse box and post it up...👍

I’ve got to be honest
I think the response on here has been great
Thank you all👍

First things first @Wrigsby1 The most likely culprit for damage / movement is the TPS

Best to Check it first @Reevo ! CO pots don't usually just go bad

Also a possibility of the Pressure relief valve sticking (Old gooey Fuel??) and the Fuel pressure being too high

Period of Injection @?? PSI determines the fuel volume per stroke "BUT" they did not fit a Fuel pressure monitor So the ECU has no way to compensate for somewhere that there is an issue

e.g. kinked return line or a stuck PRV and inline fuel pressure guage should answer that for you, about 24 to 30 psi is roughly correct

I’ve looked at the back of my frame and there’s nothing I can find strapped to the frame
I’m looking for the pot
Does that mean I haven’t one?

Reevo !! Check the easy things first !!!

you NEED a gas analyser to set the CO pot, DO NOT just play with it OR Get another one off a good known bike and plug it in ... But l;eave your own one alone until you are sure CO values were 1.8 to 2.2 Percent

Check the TPS setting First! Check the fuel pressure and fuel return lines are okay

Check Valve clearances and compression and Tick off a Diagnostics list but don't just "Fiddle"

P.S> Check the Exhaust under the gearbox IS there a Lamda probe If there is no POT

I’m on your page
I’m just trying to locate where the pot lives and what it looks like
I can use the gas analyser at my mates mot garage
There’s no lambda on exhaust
The tps on the throbody looks very new

The tps on the throbody looks very new
That is suspect on its own I wonder did they just bung it on there ??

Is the tail pipe of the exhaust very sooty

The POT looks like a square rubber thing with a cylindrical bit stuck on one end and a an electrical connection

Yes the pipe is sooty /black wipe it with your finger your fingers black
I’ll check the tps and the emissions Saturday morning down the garage and I’ll report back
Cheers for the help
Can’t be easy talking to someone with the limited knowledge of boxers
My brother rides a 9rt and tells me I need a modern one
I like how the 1100 rides you can feel stuff going round ,mechanical
I’ve got a weird analogy to this
I drive a modern estate car does everything great
But I still prefer the sierra diesel I had 100 years ago with the big 2.3 diesel in it
Windy windows zero options but torquey and friendly
Hey ho I digress

And that's it .. I recently saw the reference "analogue" biking... Just done 3rd commute on frosty roads on my old scruffster and it just reinforced my old saying that oilheads were the best winter bike BM ever made... Lots of feel, not too much of anything and an age where they could handle the shite conditions without being a PCP heart attack...😄😆 95k n counting and only another 250k to do to catch Vern...👍😄

A quick question
Is there any 1100 gs mobile tekkies in my area on site?
Dont mind paying going rate to set up tps and the basics to see where we are
I’ve found the pot it’s under the silver frame on the right
Cheers in advance

Reevo PLEASE!!! Just forget about the Fecking POT !! = absolute last resort

Leave it alone until everything else has been adjusted tested and verified!

My favourite is the TPS being over 0.5 at least likely 0.6 you want it to be 0.350to 0.4 initially and work it very very gently and fine tune it down to about 0.38volt

Right
I’ll do that tomorrow and get back to you
If’s definitely a new one it’s got non standard Allen keys fastening it
