Same thing happened today, couple of months after I changed my speedo cable. 
Out of the blue my speedo clock and needle would not work. I was in a meeting near Clapham Common so I went to BMW Battersea to see what the hell is the problem. One of the mechanics asked me if I’ve been using a disc lock and suddenly everything became clear…
Since they were extremely busy, even to fit a speedo cable, I just bought it and left. The good thing is that I can do it myself this time, I don’t have to drive all the way up to SBW BMW.
Oh well, at least I fell a bit wiser now...
