After having the tank off twice and ceaning the fuel sender contacts twice I still had the problem of the gauge mising one bar and behaving erratically, I use the local Morrisons supermarket almost exclusively, so I tried a different brand, Jet in the first instance and the gauge was immediately better, I tried it again and bingo no problem.

So I thought I'd prove the issue and went back to Morrisons, lo & behold the gauge read 1 bar low and was up & down like a bride's nightie, I went back to Jet and the problem dissappeared at the first fill, I have since tried Shell, BP & Esso and all are OK.

I contacted Morrisons who were no help at all, clearly a marketing type with no idea in customer services at Wakefield, but Conoco/Phillips Petroleum ( Jet ) technical dept replied to an email within 2 hours with 4 possible reasons and the spec of their fuel, very helpfull.

So if your gauge is failing and youv'e done the cleaning bit thaen try a different brand and avoid Morrisons.

I find I have problems if I fill up with the BLACK nozzle !!!!

Use the GREEN one and she fair flies!!!!

gauge

had the same problem and like you changed petrol stations.

this seemed to work, when I used the previous station, fuel gauge didn't work again. B*W said that some of their cars had same problem too.

Eureka...

I can't believe what I'm reading........Petrol is petrol with different additives in. The specific gravity (SG) of all brands is just about the same. If the above is true and as the tank sender is worked off a float Achimedes must have been having us all on....;)

Now Morrisons scales in thier meat deptartment....thats another story.

HAve Fun

No it's not.......and even if it were, best practice varies amongst diffrrent retailers.......

Some will flush tanks and pipes regularly, have filters in-line and generally give a toss about their quality, others will just pump you what you pay for by the litre no matter how much crap that litre contains.

Amongst the main players, granted, there probably isn't squat to chose, but between the budget operators and the quality brands, there is.

Shell Garage

Shell Garage - Holloway road - Cheap as chips - 79.9 or 78.9 normally

Cheapest around me and never a problem.

I knew a retailer once. Long time ago mind. Water got into the underground storage tanks. So he sold it as two star. ;)

(I know cause I was driving my dads 850cc Mk1 Polo - the only car I ever drove that ran on two star - or didn't run in this case).

It's so very very sad that this statement is true today!!

I wonder when the car/motorcycle manufacturers will help lobby against high taxes on fuel in this country?
