pure road tyre?

i have the Battlewings fitted to my GS, I have done 4800 miles on them so far (so good). i had a very very big slide in the wet on them last night, the back end of the bike wiggled its way down a slip road as i slowed down, much to my alarm!

on close inspection of the tyres, my back has plenty of tread but is squared off unevenly.

i do about 400 miles a week - but for the first and last ten yards which are gravel track and an arse whatever, all on road and a decent amount of motorways.

i want to fit the best pure road tyre, have been thinking of the BT020/021s....?

what is the correct way to stop the wiggling back end once it starts? i'm sure i started the problem by too much engine braking and not enough back brake. it was a frightening end to an otherwise nice quiet ride home.

Use smooth throttle control, short shift up through the gears and keep the bike as upright as you can. That will reduce the likelihood of a rear end breakout. You might like to practice rear end skids in a controlled way on fine gravel at low speed (smooth throttle is the key). This will give you confidence when one occurs for real.:thumb

I have a conti trial attack, its as grippy as the road attack that i have on my diversion 900 but with deeper tread, should last and give excellent grip, they are definatly road tyres rather than duel purpose, they should be cheaper than the 021's and last longer, but perform as well.my rear tyre cost £96 fitted ride in ride out :thumb2

there may have been some diesel on the road, if thats the case then no tyre change will help

Got some new conti road attacks on my 1150 they are very confidence building and stick very well

My mate is on his second set of BT020s (1200GS) and swears by them. Don't look as 'ard as the Tourances but he says they do a super job. Still can't catch me on my 1100GS however..(Tourances)

that does not sound like it has anything to do with the tyres.

Agreed, will be either too much rear brake or changing down too early. And, for my h'penny worth, I've found Tourances to be far more predictable than 020's in the wet.

Michelin Pilot 2's. Great grip wet or dry and they are lasting forever. Rear beginning to square off after about 10,000 miles, will easily get to 15k unless they start of behave badly on white lines etc as they get more worn in which case I'll change them for more of the same. I'd never go back to on/off road tyres for 100% road use.

Im with Ian , just come back from Barcelona, fitted Conti Trail Attacks before I left 2400 miles no problems wet or dry:D ( Rained hard for 400 miles )
seem more stable at speed banked over than Michelin Anakee`s ( 18,000 miles on those with no real problems either ). ( 6000 per rear, 7000-8000 front )

Iv'e just completed 2000 miles in the dry in Spain on my first set of Conti Road Attacks with no problems. However while getting home from the ferry in the rain they spun up whilst going over the metal strips on the expansion joints of the second severn crossing, first time while accelerating, but after this also on a steady throttle. Never experienced it before with several other makes of tyres. Checked the tyre pressures and they were down a couple of pounds back and front, which can't have helped matters, so going to be a bit carefull for a while and see how it goes.
Good friend of mine has the Michelin Pilot 2's on his Pan, and really loves them. Might give them a try next.

Conti trail attacks, superb! Always used bt020's on my road bikes and these are also fantastic. Went with the Conti's this time because, 1, for a change 2, because they are slightly more trailie looking. 3, most importantly because of the possitive responce they get on this forum from people who know. Give em a whirl, you will not regret it.

I know what you mean, happened to me loads of times on the bridge in the rain on Tourances and Anakees :eek

Conti Road Attacks mate, they are excellent you will not be disappointed.:thumb2

Seconded. Ragged the arse off my 1150GS on two trips to the Picos this year and they never let go once. As good a match to the GS as the BT020 was to the VFR800 some years ago. A marriage made in heaven.

I must be the only GSer running Avons, following a mate's recommendation. Tried Distanzias last time, bit weird for the first 500miles, then they seemed to be 'run in'. They then stayed spot on for best part of 7000miles.
Now trying Azaros - road tyres. Done nearly 4000miles so far and they've still got a good profile and give good grip, particularly in the wet.

Hard to compare though. The Tourances I replaced were knackered and a pair of liquorice allsorts would have been better!
