Is there a decent tool available for pulling the caps off? I bought a new plastic one and it doesn't do the job without I have to grip it with long-nosed pliers.I have smeared the rubber seals with silicone grease and that has helped a little.

Use a flat blade screwdriver as a leaver, and apply steady gentle pressure, and it will come unstuck and pop out.
The plastic thing works, if you apply reverse logic. Fit it to the coil and try and spread the plastic arms apart whilst gently pulling on it. Bit fiddely put it does work.
Apparently by pulling the arms apart the tongs that fit to the coil are pushed firmer together, gripping the coil tighter.
