hi-ya all

hope someone here can help with my suggestion as to weather it's feasable
here goes .

got me a quest last week from halfords £150.00 can't be bad,
what i'm really after is some advice about connecting it to my bike (fazer 1000).
i know i could spend £50.00 on a powered cradle but i'm sure i've seen somewhere a cradle with the plastic clip on the top to retain the unit for about £10.00 i just don't know where, this cradle also hashole where you can clip the wires into the back.
now here's where the advice bit comes in , what i'm intending to do is with the car kit that's supplied opening up the unit and in there there is a pcb board which contains the gubbins to knock the voltage down to 5v, so what i was thinking is can i just take the cigarette lighter socket off and with the wires it leaves just connect to an ignition live on the bike, also the 2 wires that go to the speaker can i disconnect them and just solder on a female audio plug so i can plug earphones in , i'm enclosing a link to the pic so you'll see what i mean, any thought's ???

The cheap clip is available from GPSW - do a search on here and you'll get a web address. As for fiddling with the cable, well I wouldn't but if you do try it can you have a camera handy for when it all catches fire ???

Cheapskate ;)

I've just ordered the Quest mount for around a tenner from place mentioned above - get to it via the RAM-UK click box among the ads on the top of this page.

Holder - £10 :thumb
Mount - £20 :thumb
Connector to enable power from accessory and headphone connection - £44

Still, at least I can feel confident that it'll work properly.

For what it's worth, I ordered some other stuff from RAM a couple of weeks ago and RAM-man and GPSW were very helpful.

You might be better buying a ciggie lighter socket from Maplins or somewhere like that and wiring it (with a fuse) into some switched circuit in the bike. Then you can plug the Garmin speaker/voltage converter into the socket without having to do any butchery.... :)

Or...Hein Gericke do a converter with a BMW type of plug at one end and a ciggie lighter socket on t'other. This, plus the Garmin plug n' speaker, fits under the seat of my 12GS. The RAM mount for the Quest (RAM- HOL GA 15) comes with a tiny torx key that allows you to remove the cable from the back of the Garmin car mount, and to attach it to the RAM mount. Result - bike power to the Quest at minimal cost :thumb . No audio tho', but this doesn't bother me.

PS: thanks to RAM Man for explaining that the Garmin cable can be attached to the RAM Quest mount (tho' he recommends QPAC for reliable power in hot climates).

Twotter who you calling a cheapskate, just because i don't like spending money doesn't mean i'm a cheapskate. but then again you could be right :thumb ;)

i think i'll give it a go, as tomcat says you can take the torx screw out of the car mount and screw it into the bike holder, as for any bracketry i'm a machinist /fitter by trade so i'll be whittleing something up myself, i make lots of stuff myself, not because i'm cheap you understand (not much anyway) more to do with the fact that i can, i'll post my results when it's done.
