If ive got a painstakingly worked out route downloaded into my sp3, and I go off route. When the woman asks if I require recalculation, does it calculate me back to my original planned route. Or does she calculate a complete new route right to my original destination

depends how far of route youve gone, nomaly it recalculates from where you are to your original destination

Tell her to feck off, zoom out until you can see the pink route line on the screen, then select Stars and Sextant option from the menu until you are back on your route

The way I understand it, the route she works out is made up from 'nodes', or points along the way........if you meander off route, following some bouncing floozy or promise of playing with some puppies or whatever it is that day, she'll route you back to the next 'node' along the route.......unless she can work out a new and better route altogether.

It's probably one of those things that we don't need to understand, just accept that it happens and follow the pretty pink line (until you see the next bouncing floozy )

BTW, the SPIII is bloody slow at recalculating, especially long routes, so it might be beter to set auto recalculate 'off' and either just backtrack and pick up the route or follow your nose back to it

Thats all very well Bill, but when you have spent days pouring over maps and finding the best routes through the most scenic regions you can find. Then you get diverted by whatever reason, and have to recalc. All your hard work has been in vain.
This happened to me last year going through Germany. All the routes were carefully constructed, but one particular road was closed and we were diverted.
Without thinking I just let her recalc.
Now, I dont know about anybody else, but the only time you realise that you have not passed through that bit you spent ages finding JUST that specific road or town that you had to see,.. is when you are sitting in the hotel bar at your destination, and your wife says "I thought you said we were going through that Shangrila place today". "all I saw were factories"

Den, have a look at VIA POINT PROBLEM as I had the same issue when getting used to my SPIII. Rather than missing an important via point, the easiest way is to probably follow Mike O's suggestion of just pressing the "Find" button ie when finished at say Via point 1, press "Find" then select ""Shangrila Place" etc .

Not sure about SPIII but on the 2610, the original route is not "updated" by a recalc, only what you are seeing/following is i.e. you can select the original route you spent ages on, get back on it and activate it to carry on from where you are.

I never plot routes into a GPS, it seems too time consuming. Why not just enter way points along the routes you wish to take and let the GPS find the route from one to the other.

I'm not sure about the SPIII but the Quest has a "Detour" Option (Menu -> Route Options -> Detour), and if using this option you have to choose a "Detour distance" and the Quest will attempt to get you back on the original route within that distance.

Most important is to set automatic "Off-route Recalculation" = OFF or else the SP3 can't be used for guiding you along uploaded routes. If you for some reason ends up off route just zoom out and follow the map on the screen back to your route.

Use the setups "Map Detail" = MOST and "Auto Zoom" = OFF to make the map on the screen more readable.

If you really want to recalculate the route you can do that manually by pressing the NAV button twice. This will not destroy your original route. It's still stored in memory and can be restarted from the NAV menu.
