Not really sure
I hope this is not a daft question. I am researching GPS, and am slowly moving towards a 2610. I am aware that it is powered externally,i.e. no batteries. My question is this. You are on a journey, and you have a route planned on the unit. It givesyou the directions. You decide to stop fer a cuppa. You switch the GPS off, and wander of to drink said cuppa.
WHen you set off again, the unit is switched back on. Does the route automatically come back up again without doing anything, or is there any resetting of the route to be done?

Hope that makes sense

Cheers

Phil

It will resume the route.

ta muchly Swesty. I thought it would be simple.
Now then, any thoughts as to my next course of action anyone? I am really torn between the 2610 and the Quest. Bearing in mind the Quest is £200 cheaper, and I understand the differences between the two, which one do I go for? Untimately, i wil be doing some European touring this year or next, so I need something that will cope with that. I am not sure whether the Quest will do so. Being a bit of a novice with these things I am not sure, so am looking for some guidance. (and yes I have done a search):D

I don't want to restrict my options long term, but I could do a lot with 200 squid!!

What say you all?

Choice Og GPSs

I have just spent about three weeks research on Quest...SP111+...or SP3 2610...

Have a look at www.gpsinformation.net and www.pocketgps.co.uk . Excellent reviews

I have just received my 2610 from sportextreme in Denmark. Superb service and price.

I have a 1150GSAdv. Therefore after research and questions to numerous users I have bought. A migsel mount for mounting on the instrument panel/ Mounting ball sockets garmin cradle, angled brackets and power lead(for speaker in helmet use) from www.ram-mounts.co.uk (steve Dickinson) (Ram man) is brill.

Finally I chose the 2610 over the quest and SP111 + because of all the various features. Touch screen, eight times faster to recalculate routes, bigger screen and most importantly upgradeability.. the only down side fore me is that it is not portable (batteries). But then again the reviews do not recommend it for hiking etc. The web sites I have quoted give excellent reviews. Hope this helps

Regards

RAINDANCER, thanks very mch for the info, have trawled, and I think I am gonna go fer the 2610 in due course. i think this will be a better bet long term.

Cheers.

Lol....I've gone the opoosite way.

I've had an SPIII, and Ive just ordered a quest as its replacement.....

The 2610 is too big, and you can't take it off and slip it in a pocket when you leave the bike.........and without batteries, you'll either have to carry cables and adaptors or not be able to play with routes and stuff in a hotel, bar or tent when you're away for the weekend.

I've also just put a Migsel speedo mount on the ADV, and the SPIII wobbles like a big wobbly thing on it, even with a 1 inch ram bar, on anything other than smooth tarmac- the Querst is lighter by a lot so I'm expecting it to wobble less and be more sympathetic to the mount and dashboard long term.

I never ride without gloves, so I really can't see the touchscreen being of much more use than a nice toy to show off, and as for having a seperate remote control for the 2610, that's justa negative factor to my mind, not a positive.

As you say, the 200 quid difference is significant........but TBH, even if they were the same price right now, I suspect i'd probably go for the quest right now.....no-one as yet has managed to come up with £200 worth of arguements why the 2610 is better as far as I'm concerned.

(screen size is a start, but I plug mine into an autocom or straight through the earplug monitors, and voice is fine for me, even around central london where I work a lot.........a bigger screen would be nice but not in exchange for not being able to put the little fekker in me pocket and walk away)

JMHO.

Blood 'ell Fanum, thanks for that, I though I was sorted out, and had made the decision!! bugger bugger bugger. :D :D :D

However, you make good points. As far as the touch screen is concerned, can anyone tell me how they have found using it with gloves on? I do ultimately intend to have voice guidance routed through an intercom, but this is a way off, so will be relying on the screens. As far as portability is concerned, for various reasons, that is not an issue with me.

Cheers

i've just put a 2610 on a migsel mount today & it does indeed wobble a bit. i'm not convinced it's totally a function of the weight though.

the whole dash assembly wobbles a lot anyway as a result of wind battering + bumpy roads. when you mount something above the instruments it's going to move a bit more than everything else 'cos it's further from the dash mounts at the bottom.

good thing is, it's right in the line of sight & i won't have to bother with the hassle of earpieces etc. all route instructions are pretty obvious from the easily seen screen.

all in all a very neat install. i'm going to put a longer arm on later, angled down a bit over the RID so the 2610 is lower to see if it moves less.

i will also be leaving it wired live all the time, at least not going off with the ignition, that would be a total PITA. a switch somewhere i think.

it still wobbles

it still wobbles

I have look at the pictures of the Migsel mount system, and I think I will be going for summat else for the above reason. I can't see how it can do anything other than wobble with a chunk of GPS on the end of it, and attached to a plastic mounting (i.e. the dash). Would have thought a bar mounted system would be better?

it's OK i think, but it did funny things to my head at first. i thought a handlebar mount would be obstructed by a tank bag also.

at least it's some kind of isolation from the harder jolts the unit would get on a firmer mount

it's very much easier to see up there too.

"i thought a handlebar mount would be obstructed by a tank bag also".

.. If you have the U-bolt mount with standard arm, RAM-B-201, then to get over the tank bag, try a RAM-B-230 ball adaptor with a second arm, normally two standard arms RAM-B-201 will do the trick to allow angle and adjustment and is better than just replacing with the longest arm...

there's an idea :)

more experimentation with the migsel mount first though.

re mounts

just fitted 2610 with u bolt and standard sized ram arm with ram cradle results mint no wobbly bits screen is just where u need it and best of all its fully adjustable (with a turn of a thumbscrew) now wheres that sun at

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread from the depths........I GOT A GPS...at long last. AFter a lot of buggering about, I was able to get a used 2610 from the good Fitzdangle, on this very board. Thanks chap :thumb

I must say, its a cracking bit of kit! Very pleased with it to date, although I have only used it in the mota. Went for a driver through the lincolnshire countryside last week, and it got me and the missus wher we wanted to go.
(As an aside, what a lovely area Lincs is..at least the western half)

Any road up, all I need to do it sort out mounting the thing on the bike..having read through hundreds of threads on the subject, I have narrowed it all down to what i want. All I need to do, is get the funds sorted, and ready to rock and roll. I look forward to the better weather, so I can get out and try it out properly.

Please as punch of Northant
