A couple of months ago, my quick shifter failed for the second time.

The bike is still under warranty. The first time the break in the wiring was repaired via an official BMW ‘patch’. This time it’s a new loom. By this, I assume it’s a new sub-loom, which connects in somehow. Five to seven days for it to arrive from wherever BMW keep their looms.

The bike is still fully rideable, it’s only the quick shifter that doesn’t work. I say doesn’t…. Now and again it will sometimes work for one shift, I assume when the broken wire either reconnects or doesn’t short against something.

aarrrggghhh , the trials and tribulations of modern bikes.

my mate Nick ( not yet dead , much to everyone's surprise ) toured Europe on his Guzzi G5 , with a pair of mole-grips attached to the gearchange shaft and retained with a bit of string .
he would laugh at your worry.

I’m not worried by it.

I do have some mole grips, in case I should ever need them. Some string, too. The latter holds up my trousers.

I’d argue that my quick shifter as never worked. I love the game ‘Buckaroo’.

So does one's left foot......which is more reliable 🤔

Yup, you operate the quickshifter, with the left foot.

Besides a very short go on a Honda Goldwing, I haven’t tried any of the push button / ‘automatic’ bikes yet, but I hear they are now vey good *. The big 1600 is all but made for an ‘automatic’ gearbox. I guess it’s only the additional weight and / or that the big engine is not seen as ‘green’ that prevents it, perhaps? I’d certainly have a lengthy test ride on one, should BMW ever build it.

* Certainly the latest cars are.
