hi all

does any body now how to adjust the tick over on the r100gs
as my one is ticking over just under 1000 RPM and it keeps stalling
and i think it should be ticking over at 1500ish

thanks

See that hexagonal screw head on the top left of the picture?

After making sure the mixture is correct on both IIRC, with the idle screw off it's stop and the throtle cables slack. Then set the idle screw, then balance the cables.

cool i just had a look at my carb and its looks like on my one that its a small flat head screw that is pushing down on a small plate.
would i be right in thinking that u need to do both carbs

Yeah, it has to be the same on both Carbs. Well, the output has to be the same at least. Balancing them with a pair of vacuum gauges is usually a winner too.

Good luck, keep us updated!

is it clock wise or anti clock wise u turn the screw to turn the tick over higher ?

IF you set the tickover to 1500 you will heat the bollox off it in traffic of any kind!

You need to check your model of carb, There is a small ID number on part of the vertical alloy below the Vacuum chamber

From that you get the pilot screw setting? Set it! Then do the valve clearances take the bike for a 15 mile run to get it warmed well

When you come back in adjust the screws at the front inside until you get and idle of around 900 - 1000 rpm and then fine tune to balance them! on throttles screws and on cables

If it is stalling when cold?? THEY ALL DO THAT SIR!

Is it just me or is the 1500 rpm tickover figure a bit high? :rob

Nope. I agree as well
I try for 800 - 1000 rpm..
Gertie can tick over reliably as low as 550 rpm :eek
My thought would be the bloody emulsifying of slow running jet .
if you look at the carbs with air intake tubes off, you will see 3 channels at the bottom of the venturi..
All the shit dripping off the breather tubes [not present on ANY of my airheads:rob]
dribbles into the middle fecker and fucks the slow running...

This process obviously works, 'cos my bike runs so much better at all revs since Jay done this.....Cheers again Jay:aidan

If you don't have a lot of experience in carb fiddling aim for 1000 rpm, easy to achieve and close enough. 1500 is too high, you might find that it is difficult to change gears smoothly if the revs are too high when you back off the throttle

........come to think of it being an airhead you might find it difficult to change gears smoothly regardless :blast :D

Hmm, mine's a bit clattery on the gearchange of late. I notice it takes a while for the idle to drop when pulling up as well. Been meaning to sort that but haven't made the time. I guess I'm due a carb cleaning session then. Two birds, one stone kind of thing... :thumb2

mine is set to 1000 rpm but stopped long in traffic it keep sounding like it is going to stall so i am going to service the bike soon then will c what it runs like

how do you deciefer what the numbers on the side of the carb mean in relation to pilot screw?

Don't worry about it. Adjust the idle with the idle screw, then screw the mixture screw (under the carb) on each side until optimum revs, then re-adust the idle screws. I like my bikes idling v e r y low. The r100gs at 700-800 rpm and my 1150 at 800rpm.

Easy to balance the cables under load by ear and feel once you've done it enough times. Feel/listen to the engine eveness as you just open the throttle off idle. Adjust cables so you feel no uneveness or hesitating as throttle opens.
