I just couldn't leave this alone. So I looked it up, with some brushing up (pun) on theory, I do admit. So from what I understood, different types alternators/generators achieve excitation current in different manners. The ones that possibly need to be flashed get their excitation in a mouse trap sort of way thru transformer induction from the stator. When the process is starting up this current is very weak, and if the rotor has a polarity that is off, it will never start up making electricity. So the flash trick will help these gensets make power without problems (one mentioned was a portable genset). Then there is another type that uses power from a battery for excitation current just for the starting process and then generates without battery power while running, and uses the above transformer action to keep the excitation current going.
The bmw airhead automotive type of alternator uses the battery current all the time thru the slip rings for it's excitation. As soon as you turn the key, your basically flashing the rotor, and it seems that there is no need to flash early on imo. But it won't hurt anything at all if you do. If you keep the wires straight ....
And then of course there are magnet rotor alternators, that use a magnet to make the rotating two pole field on the rotor. With new powerful earth magnets this method has been revived as earlier units were very small in output like the magneto .....
A while back I seen earth magnet rotors for airhead bmws in a big parts catalog. I wished I would have bought one then ..... I haven't tried to look up these but they should work very well and I think the one I seen in the catalog was an upgrade in wattage ......
