This could be retitled “The antidote to Wunder-tech and Toura-Lick accessorising”.:D

This is the latest of 3 GS’s I have owned between 3 K’s. 11/1150 GS’s are great for DIY’ers. I don’t visit dealers or many bike shops and pay cash for my bikes. This GS will be a long term buy.:clap

This is for those who like to or have to do mods for low ££££ rather than hitting the telephone directory like catalogues.

Base bike is eBay supplied 96 R1100GS, bought May 2007, £1750 with ABS, HG’s, panniers, Baglux, and only 20k miles on clock! It had been cat C’ed in 1997 and fixed so it was fine but this put off many buyers. It was a steal at the time but prices have come down.

Mod 1: Screen and topbox. 2nd hand Aeroflow (£110 and excellent) with home made addition. My Kappa box replaced with BMW system that came with my recent £1k K11LT.

Mod 2: Laser exhaust + chip and Aeroguards (leg things) for £100 together.

Baglux trimmed to fit the Aeroguards which makes not a bit of difference to how it works!

Laser was too loud and chip bogged it down so sold for what I paid for it and put back to standard.

Mod 3: Mudguard extender made out of a piece of rubber.

Mod 4: Airhawk seat from US for less £££’s! Standard seat is crap even rebuilt and especially after a K11LT seat. The Airhawk fits on any bike.

Mod 5: An extra 12v GPS socket was fitted in the shelter of the screen via eBay for less than £10.

Mod 6: R1100S footpegs from M/Works for £20’ish as my legs are too long and needed more room.

Mod 7: A sidestand “Bigfoot” made out of a fishbox that appeared after a Shetland storm!

Mod 8: Shoulder and neck probs due to sportsbikes meant that bars were a pain even with bar-backs fitted (£20 of an engineering mate in 2001!), so I fitted the bars off my broken up KLT. £20’ish from the usual for those interested. No extra vibes and only prob is a bit tighter with a tankbag. No brace needed for you road riders.

Mod 9: Larger LH pannier back from M/works and a Remus from Andy “Judge” off this site. I have straightened the rear silencer bracket out and attached at the footrest using a longer bolt. This turns the pipe slightly and I have “blacksmithed” the centrestand to fit correctly around the collector.

Mod10: HEL top brake hose to sort out the hazard highlighted in the “sticky” on brake pipes. My old pipe was suspect but still operating OK.

Mod 11: Old pair of Acrebics brush guards (off last GS) for shaping old Oxford handlebar muffs. Throttle Rocker to stop the hand cramp, ahem!

The last 2 ½ years include bevel pivot bearings, a 2nd hand coil, telelever crown bearing and ignition switch, the usual servicing, and recently gearbox rebuilt by Steve Scriminger (top man!). At the time I fitted new clutch. All pricey but necessary…

Tyres are eBay deals, often being different brands but with no real difference despite what you read.

I wash but don’t polish, the bike is used in all weathers and is corroded in places but hey, it’s a bike. I use grease, WD40 and even black Waxoil on wheels! Shetland salt is unforgiving…

R11/1150’s are one of the best 365/all weather bikes so go use ‘em!:D

All my clothing is also eBay bought cheap but high quality gear (System 4, Belstaff Discovery, BMW Sportsguard trousers) and 10 year old BM Savanna boots.

Any other owners with cheap mods?:thumb

A man after my own heart :thumb2 I will have to pull my info together and post it up.

I had the same screen and leg guards on my 1100 and it made it as good as an RT for touring but with less weight. Heaven knows why you need that screen extension too though. What are you 8ft tall ??

6'6" tall. Sadly as screen was 2nd hand i couldn't spec the screen height and it was a shorty. As I have always been 6'6" tall (feels like that anyway) I have made a couple of "extras" for previous ones from spare screen. This is the "tall" model.

Bit the bullet on my budget K11LT and bought a tall 'een. As with many K11LT's the motor is fecked so the screen is fixed at optimum.

A gales is blowing this week so I might catch another fish box!:D

PS Just "splashed out" on the gaucho thing for duvet comfort so will let you know how it gets on back from Cornwall to Shetland. Looking at the weather it sure is going to get a test...

Hi Wrigsby,

Nice post!

Does the occy-strap net over your Airhawk work well? Don't you feel the straps? I generally just hold down my Airhawk with my Alaska Leather (i.e. overpriced but custom-fitted version of a Lamb-Land sheepskin) that has its own straps, but sometimes would like to use the 'hawk by itself and I've lost the silly little bra-straps that came with it.

Rob

Hi Robroy

The net works great over the Airhawk. I thought it would be crap but you can't really feel in. It's cut a line in the cover though but i will use some tougher stuff on top.

The bra strap thing seemed OK but were crap if you want to remove it quickly. As Airhawks are expensive then they are also tealeaf'able so i like to take it with me at services etc. To have it nicked and then have to face 100's o miles without would be a literal PIA.

The black bag adds to the effect as that is usually 'cos your seat is ripped=no interest!:thumb (Well that me trade secrets gone!)

Much of the time it's better to have a rougher "looking" bike than a shiny!

They are Aeroflow. Approx £125 new:eek but £25 as an eBay steal. I have long legs to go with being too tall and they stop yer legs getting blown about too much.

Exspensive

No matter how cheap things are, if you don't need them in the first place that means they're expensive. :D

I like that exhaust mod that lets you use a proper sized pannier. :thumb2

99.999% of the time its just in the way

Thanks for the warning about the tops box. My last 'een broke the rack and I will watch the weight.

The can was still well polished.... might not last:D

Paul Young has best ebay style buying so far. FOC is always a good price:D

Pipe works a treat as it is but requires a bit if bashing to the centrestand. C/ctand still works as per usual.

Yesterday was 700+ miles from Aberdeen to Penzance via Edinburgh and pickup of NAB's chainsaw. Weather varied from OK to absolute crap from the A7 Borders to Lancaster. Only bikes in the pish on the M6 were me and a Pan & both of us were happy enough! GS's are the best bad weather bikes:D

Wore out some writing on my new Trail Attack though.

Next up is gaucho via Sempione. Progress report to follow.......
