R1100GS ABS

I am looking at an R1100GS.

It has been off the road for a while, but has turned over in that time.

It seems that the ABS light comes on when the bike is started and does not go out. I though itmight be due to a flat/shagged battery, but apparently even once charged it still happens.

Do you need to reset the ABS on a 1100 once the battery has been disconnected, the way you do on the servo assisted system?

If not, what could the problem be? Large gaps at the wheel sensor?

I'd rather know if there is possibility of a big bill for work needed...

1) Do the both ABS lights flash simultanously (both flashing at the same time) when you swich the ignition on?

2) Do they start to flash alternately when you start the engine with the starter?

- If both answers are "yes", then it's a sheet bettery (or a cold weather?).

- If the first Qs answer is "no", (they start to flash alternately after swiching on the ignition) means ABS needs reset. If reset not helping, it could be wrong sensor gaps (rare case) or the brakes need bleeding (could be ancient old oil or air left in the system).

PS: on 1100 if all is OK (both ABS lights flash simulataneously after you've started the engine with starter), then they flash until you ride the bike to the 3mph speed, then the ABS finally starts, making a "clonk" sound after takeoff.

mine used to do the same thing - even after a long battery charge.

It all sorted itself out with a brand new battery.

more than likely the old battery is sulphated / shagged and only holds a surface charge.

Thanks you lot: Its what I had in mind, simply coz the same happened to my 1150 but best to check the 1100s aren't any different!
