R1100GS won't start in gear (clutch in)

My bike will only start in neutral. Not if in gear with clutch lever pulled in. Sometimes it takes quite a few seconds to recognise that it's in neutral IE for the light to come on and then the starter will spin. I don't often stall it but am wondering if this is connected to the myriad electrical hassles i am having. I am trying to narrow down stuff before Steptoe gets it to work on.

Any ideas?

trace the electrical wire that goes in to the clutch lever housing

Basically if you CAREFULLY peel back some insulation on the two wires inside the sleeve (yellow ??) and bridge the wires across with another bit of wire to test and see that even if in the bike is in Gear with the clutch out, it will now turn over on the starter??

Be Warned you need to replace the clutch lever switch Rather than leave a temporary repair

Don't damage the switch - Bridge the other end, where the lead plugs into the loom. Obviously bridge the loom end , not the switch. It should then start in gear whenever you press the starter button. If it does then the clutch switch is fecked 99% of the time this is the problem). Get a new one.

If after the bridging the loom it still doesn't turn the engine over when in gear then the problem is elsewhere.

The 1200 switch is adjustable. Undo the very tiny torq screw and turn the switch until it starts, then lock it back in place.
