Good morning,

Whilst my GS is off the road having a extensive service I have been looking at the space in my garage where my NC30 once lived (sold at the start of the year) and still itch for a machine that is a bit more geared towards the sporty end of the spectrum over the GS..

I have always liked the Boxercup bikes but as these are gaining value and my own justification for only really wanting to spend a more modest amount I have seen that the R1100S prep bikes are still very reasonable and numerous in numbers.

Now the crux of the matter, I actually want to use this bike from some serious sports riding, I have done a lot of trackdays in the past and would normally be in the Intermidiates or fast group depending on track and it is something I would like to get back into in the future if only to hone my skills and to keep my riding in top shape.

I do not believe I have ever seen a R1100S being used on track and certainly have no one to ask any question of hence I would think if there is someone tracking these bikes it would be here???..

I am firmly interested in the "prep" model not the standard S, Do these come with the same handle bar height as the Boxercup bikes that are situated lower?..

I know the easy answer is to say we'll just get a CBR600 but in all honesty I now know my way around a boxer engine, I like the platform all be it scared shitless about the possible spline issue!!!!!! .. I would not be scared to park it somewhere like I would a full on sports bike, insurance is very cheap.. Plus it's different..

I can still head to Europe for a tour and scratch or head to Lydden hill for a cheeky trackday. I can get one for my budget of £2500-3000 and it leaves money in the bank for full servicing and suspension refresh.

Any in put most welcome

Watch from 6.10 for on board view its a Boxer Cup but apart from paintjob very similar to the "Prep"

I have an R1100S (none of the above is me) they are a lovely bike, handle well and go Ok however they are fairly heavy and in reality about 85 bhp, most 600s would eat you at the track (not on the road however)

Have you thought about an R1200S a fair bit more poke and the prices are coming down.

Ask the question over on Www.boxertrix.com

I did two track days on my 2004 Boxer Cup, second of which was a Hopp Rider Training Day at Cadwell.

I got put in the fast group (by mistake), but was circulating with R1200s, another R1100s, CB600RR, Yam 400 stroker, and a Gixxer 600 - and managed to keep up. They are so stable under braking into bends, and the bends themselves - very satisfying.

I'd be looking at putting on decent shocks (or rear - at least), De-cat, Lennies induct, Superfilter, and perhaps Lennies Rocket-sprockets- then some form of fuel augmentation to keep up with the improved air/exh flow.

I have Carbon fibre wheels on my BCR - now, that's a great improvement :rob

The standard R1100s may be limiting in ground clearance of the cyl heads, which was the reason the last BCR was a lot higher. You may want to consider similar shock lengths (and the GS torque arm) to suit.

Where in London are you based? Me and a friend (also here) have both used the 1100S on track fairly extensively and might be able to give you some advice.

I would recommend budgeting aftermarket shocks. My Boxer Cup is on Ohlins and it makes an enormous different against the stock shocks. Handling is fantastic, the brakes are brilliant, the only issues are the weight and lack of top end power.

Here's a couple of threads by someone who has taken the track mods a bit further than me (and he's CONSIDERABLY faster than me)...

Yep, Damien has modded the bike extensively for track use. It feels much different to ride than the stock 11S. However if you buy the RWB or Mamola rep BCR you only need 3 or 4 mods which won't cost the earth because you have the Laser exhaust as standard. First get the suspension refreshed by MCT to your specs. Next a K&N air filter. And then shorten the telelever for better response and turn in. Get the brake hoses replaced for braided items.

If you can afford it the carbon wheels is a god send because one rear wheel of the 11S weighs as much as 2 production wheels off a superbike. I have ditched the front hose for 2 braided items (common mod) that makes it easier to bleed the brakes. The 2 best mods I have done to the bike is to fit Stompgrip panels that helps me to use my knees to keep the body in position braking hard and hanging off the bike. It leaves your arms free to steer and you feel more relaxed on the bike. The panels for the Honda SP1/2 fits the bike perfectly. And the shortened telelever.

A few things to note when you take the 11S on track. The brakes are good for such an old design. You can brake later, harder and deeper into a corner. Only problem with the telelever is that it becomes harder to steer as the rake is pushed out under braking. Hence the shorter telelever mod. Keep on top of the brakes to keep it that way. It is a heavy bike and going full chat will tire you out quickly. Fitness helps massively. Take the exhaust baffles with you. It may not pass the noise test at certain tracks. A gear indicator helps with the rhythm of riding on track. You can make your own. Search for buzzz on the forums. He made some and the plans is on there. You just have to figure out the logic to build the circuit. No special tyres are required. You will run out of ground clearance before you are off the side of the tyre. I use Michelin PR2's and it suits the bike quite well. And the bike loves sweeping corners, the faster the better. On slow corners you might detect that it is slower to pick up than opposite corners, that is because of the direction of rotation of the engine. Nothing to worry about. Whatever you do don't break the rear subframe mounting lugs. It is a write off and a new frame. You can weld it but the BCR cup guys braced the lugs with and extra horizontal peace of aluminium.

Also see this website. Full of detail knowledge if you ignore the arsehole replies.

A few mods I can justify but I am not looking at BSB level so will pass on the Carbon wheels..

Shame that no one does cheaper engine case options other than the BMW carbon bling option..

There are much cheaper and more durable options. The BCR carbon covers are mostly cosmetic and don't protect anything. When on track I fit the touratech head covers off my GS.

Carbon wheels are no longer produced for the R1100s, and from memory - only 5 pairs of Dymag CF wheels were ever produced, all going to American riders who organised a group-purchase. I think I have one set of the two sets of Carbon Rim/Magnesium Spoke wheels, and there are a handful of All-Magnesium wheels.

So - Lightweight wheels are perhaps a non-starter for such an old bike, and S/H ones will rarely appear, I think.

As above - there are alternatives, other than the (if memory serves) £400 a pop for the CF ones from BMW - if available. The CF belly pan of the Boxercup is a £1,400 item :blast

They are cracking bikes, though.
