I would be really grateful for any advice, Ive notice the following on my gearbox.

The smudge is my finger obviously, does'nt smell like the trans fluid does when you change it. Should I be concerned??

As I'm about to change the gearbox oil, can I drain it by removing this plug, and then replace the washer?
Whats the best solution to removing the yellow stain?

Many thanks Stuart

That all depends on if it reappears after you've wiped it off.

There is no washer on that plug.
You can drain it from that plug but there's no benefit. Plus you'll need a very large allen (12mm or 14mm i can't remember right now) socket and there's very restricted access. The 1100S gearbox uses that drain plug as it has no drain plug on the side of the gearbox.

Gearbox oil on the 1150 is usually drained out by the drain plug on the side of the gearbox.

Yes thats the drain plug if photo is upside down.

ref the grey sludge - looks like an oil contaminated with aluminium - is that case joint loose with the paste being the effect of the two metals rubbing together, I wonder?
Certainly not to be ignored if so.

The yellow staining is from leaking petrol and will not come off. = repaint.

.

It's not the drain plug on an 1150 gearbox.

It's the bottom plug underneth the box, hence why it's above the cat in the picture.

REAPPEARED ADVICE PLEASE

This was after I wiped it clean and then rode 60 miles this evening.
Shall I,

1) Forget about it?
2) Do I need to get it repaired now to prevent more serious problems or breaking down?
3) Ride for a few more thousand miles and budget for future work.

Many thanks Stuart

You have a leaking seal . Could be rear crank seal or gearbox input shaft seal, you won't know for sure which one until the gearbox is taken out.

It is possible to get off. In my case I used a kitchen sponge with a scouring pad on it and very hot water and car shampoo. Very slow, by it worked.

They're is also the kerosene based cleaner that steptoe recommends,if you can find it. Way better than my method, but you just need to find it!

Done the hot water trick too but mine wouldn't budge - perhaps I didn't perservere long enough.
Haven't sourced the reccomended cleaner? however, due to the age and condition of mine now, I'm not bothered with the look these days.;)

I will admit, it was slow! And maybe not all the stains are quite the same (with regard to how deeply is affected the paint). You could maybe use some 0000 wire wool. Just make sure you finish off with some polishing paste to restore the sheen.
