in the last couple of weeks i have fitted a "y" piece, remus can and k+n filter to the GS, this has improved the mid range etc etc at this I was thinking of not investing in a management chip.

Then I joined this forum and found an article from one guy about holeing pistons because he had done the same mods and the chip had not been changed and going on to say that you should change the chip and get the bike dynoed etc to avoid this.

Now the question is do we often get problems with running weak? The bike seems fine, should I panic and dash out to invest in a chip?
In short is it common to find holed pistons on GSes?

He's the only one I've heard of. Hundreds of us have fitted Y's and race cans, and quite a few with K & N's as well. Maybe he just got unlucky. :(

6000 miles with a K&N, Y-piece and Remus can, no chip change.Runs like a dream. Some say these techlusion thingies don't really do anything, but what do I know. Done a 2 up holiday hooning round the Alps, a track day ,loads of other stuff , all with no problems.

I have just fitted a remus and Y piece, in the y piece there is threaded hole for the sensor thingy, I dually screwed the sensor thingy into the afor mentioned hole, has this got anything to do with how lean or rich the engine will run?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge

Yup, it's yer Lambda probe...............;)

As I understand it the lamda sensor will adjust the motronic within its range and capability. Certainly with removal of the cat, free flow zorst and K&N the bike will want to run leaner (and this on bikes already tuned lean for emission regs) so it is wise to richen it up. A Techlusion can do this, but it is not a chip. Also good to adjust your TPS up to approx 4v. If in doubt and available
a dyno would be good to put mind at rest. But really no need to be alarmist - holed GS pistons are virtually unheard of.

re holed pistons

Thanks for the feed back much happier now. Whats these technoclusion thingies you guys are on about, also the code in Big Dom's reply can us that dont know have a translation? might just be me.

It was me that holed a piston and yes I think I'm the only one that's managed it, but I'm not so sure I'll be the last. Prior to holing the piston my bike also seemed to be running really well and I had no warnings of anything being wrong (or maybe I'm just stupid or deaf!). I did all the things recommended on various threads in this forum, refit lambda, reset motronic etc. The only thing I couldn't do was remove the cat code plug because my bike didn't have one but I've read that this isn't unusual.

All our bikes seem to be different but I simply recommend that you get the bike dyno'd. It's worth spending £20 - £40 now instead of hundreds later. I was fortunate that I could do the repair work with the help of my father but even then my repair bill was over £200 for second hand bits and new gaskets, plugs, filter etc etc.

PS. I don't have shares in dynojet or any related company, I just don't want anyone else to hole a piston.

Cheers for now,

StooL

Do search for Techlusion - is an alternative (to most) for a power chip ... adds extra fuel through 'talking' to motronic when needed.
Is adjustable for different rev ranges... kinda like an extra adjsutable fuel injection.

TPS = Throttle Body Sensor (little black match box on LHS throttle body that scars your shins for life when you first get the bike!)

4v = four volts
