First post so here goes.

I have a 02 GS with 7,500 miles on the clock, it has been stuck in the back of my garage for 5 years as I stopped riding after a hip problem.

A mate has been pestering me to buy it off me for a while and I had just about decided to sell it. Either I sell it as is and leave him him to sort it out or I get it running and MOTed.

The bike is a blue/white 1150 GS with ABS and heated grips with 7,000 miles and looks good with no corrosion evident. It has not been run for 5 years, battery is dead and tyres are the original.

Obviously 2 options, sell as it is without doing any work, or get it running and put an MOT on on it.

I have a BMW top box and panniers, Y piece and it is chipped so I could sell those those seperately or include them.

What sort of a price should I put on if I go with option 2?

Option 1 - It would need a new battery and plugs to see if it will start. I should be able to do the service myself replacing oil and brake fluid, maybe replacing tyres and polybelt. What else might be needed?

Of course the risk with option 1 is after getting it running I may not want to sell it, I'm already having second thoughts after washing and seeing how good it is looking:)

if you're up to riding it

I'd go with option 3,

sort it and keep it :)

Weather is getting warmer, days are getting longer, I think you need to test ride it for him to make sure it is running right and then make up your mind which I don't think will take very long.....sounds like a beauty and too good to sell....

Drain the old engine oil before you turn the engine over or try to start it. :thumb

And don't write the battery off - three months ago i bought an 1150ADV that had stood for 5 years untouched.
The battery was flat as a pancake, i attached a car charger, left it for 3 days and it started on the button (even with the old fuel in it). And since then the battery has stayed fully charged without any form of charging :thumb

change oil, get new battery, start it. Clean and lubricate all moving parts, Check tyres closely though they will no doubt be Ok, MOT, change oil again after a couple of hundred miles. Use it or sell it as a going bike. Dave.

Well the idea was to to clear the garage, I started to ebay stuff just to get rid of the all the stuff hoarded over the years so that I could think about downsizing the house. Selling the GS looked like an easy way to make space.

But, back to the bike, I have tried a battery charger on it, but it refused to charge. I've got a different one and plugged that in, it says it charging so I see what it's like in the morning.

Thanks for the servicing tips, I was going to drain the old fuel into the car, it's old and off our hands soon.:)

No - prices suggested yet. So much depends on condition - and its not really the best time to be selling (I'm starting to sound like a dealer).

I think you should be thinking around £4k+ when its sorted - that's a seriously low milage and they don't come along very often.

Please note - any advice offered may turn out to be utter bo!!ocks as will become apparent if you hang around here a bit longer.

Be sure you may not want it in the next year or so if you descide to sell. For the money you will get it would be unlikely you could find such a low mile one easily. Trouble is it is harder to sell an low mile 1150 for much more than the lowest priced R12's. Also the market is low at the mo and I think leasure and pleasure bikers will not be throwing cash around with quite such the same abandon.

Listen to Steptoe re oils... he's the man that will know about re-commissioning. All oils changed for not too much cash:thumb

Guideline only of course it don't take into account the low mileage :augie

Everything is going to be seized. All the seals will have dried out and cracked. The clutch will be corroded to the flywheel. If you do get it to start it will piss oil out everywhere, the leaking fuel pipes will drip fuel onto the catalyst and the entire plot will go up in flames. The initial flash will vapourise your bollocks, and the fire willl take out your garage closely followed by your house.

I am an expert on these things, trust me mate.

I'll give £250 and will collect it to save you a pile of grief.

P.S. It would really be unfair to burden your mate with such a life threatening hazard.

Do what Steppers says, oil change charge the battery and RIDE IT!!!.

:DWas originally going to be my tack, but I didn't quite have the poetic edge you have....:D After what Steptoe says he has gotten bikes for in the past, it might be an example of his pitch...:bow:D

PS I did once describe a possible K12RS PX bike to the owner who had given me the "immaculate" speil over the phone as so bad "we wouldn't want it or insult our traders with it":D

No, I wouldn't be so cruel, how could i dump a load of shite on such a fine and upstanding gser tosser.

In my experience once you start spending money on a bike to sell, you never recover what you've spent.

By all means give it an oil change and see if it runs but if it needs any more then describe it honestly and let the new owner find out the full extent rather than spending more and more as you find other bits that need work.

Also you cant really sell it as a good runner without giving it a decent test ride so by the time you've forked out for tax and insurance you're way over budget for what you'll recover when you sell it.

Ah but will you ever be able to get over the "flash vapourising your bollocks" bit...:D

I would do as Steptoe says. Give it a go and see. My experience of 1100's was that they could be a bit leaky if left standing for a long time, mainly out of seals like the gearbox etc but this could all be different on the later bikes and you could have years of nothing wrong.

The thing is a low mileage bike will look appealing to buyers but may not command a ton more cash. They tend to have stages of ownership which make a difference to price such as whether clutches have been done with higher miles and good general servicing. Obviously with such a low mileage this should not be an issue.

Mainly depends on whether you still see it as "your" potential bike or as a nice £££££££'s of cash waiting to be realised...:D If the latter, do the basics and get rid in a few weeks time as the temp goes up...:augie

That's the nicest thing anyone on here has ever said about me:D

Go on then I'll up my bid by 50 quid.

Drain & change the oil, change the filter

Blow out the airfilter, charge the battery

Fire the old girl up, check the brakes

What have you got to lose?

If she's fine...............take her for the MOT and bring her home

Polish her up and stick her on here for £4500, if you don't want to keep her:thumb2
