R1150GS SINGLE SPARK Vs TWIN. Pros/cons?

ss 45-48 mpg , engine had rough spot @ 4250 rpm, clunk-clunk abs , can be used cranked over. has a light switch

ds 5 mpg more , lovely and smooth. electric abs ( now removed ) brakes now as above . doesn't have a light switch

Twin spark was an attempt to cure the spurious surging some bikes suffered IMHO.
My 02 single spark was fine my 05 twin spark surged.

The twin spark felt too lean running to me, af-xied sorted that.

The single or twin spark is not a concern. The bigger question is servo or non servo abs. The answer is always non servo or remove it entirely. Yes it still all works fine and yes it can be done for free by an idiot. A guide is buried on this forum.

Many thanks for the replies guys, so basically not much other than a bit of a flat spot.

I never had any issues with surging or non-servo ABS on my 2003 single spark bike and fuel consumption was always more than 50-52 mpg, the only issues I had was corrosion under the powder coating.

I have a pair of twin spark R1100S cylinder heads tucked away somewhere in the garage, plus a spare pair of coils, 2 into 1 headers and a link pipe. I fancied the challenge of changing my 2000 model single spark into a twin spark but still haven’t got around to it…

The twin spark ecu has a small delay in firing the second plugs, to ignite unburnt fuel for cleaner emissions. There was no performance advantage so my idea was to simply run both plugs simultaneously from 4 coils.

At the time the surging issue hit the press it seemed to be about the lambda set up running leaner on a constant throttle so feeling like it was running low on fuel... There is obviously the throttle on/off surging associated with the 1100's Motronic 2.1 and a badly set up 1150... This is mainly the harsh fuelling around 2kish when it's returning to the TPS fuelling.

I rode a handful on 1150s that owners said "surged" and found them usually fine... I had a twin spark RT and found the usual setup issues even with that even though it ran pretty well... I always had a feeling that twin spark was as much about squeezing emissions as anything else and if a single spark feels fine to ride it'll be just as good...

A new motronic chip from GS John in Greece is likely the answer to any surging.

Setting it up correctly in the first place is the cheapest and simplest answer ..
none of my bog standard single spark bikes surge.

Have owned two very early single spark non abs bikes (114 and 138 off the production line ) and neither suffered from surging problems (with iridium plugs fitted)
