Hi, lapsed member in need of advice.

I’ve owned my 2001 R1150GS for 15 years and due to other stuff happening it’s still got less than 20,000 miles on the clock. I’ve hardly ridden it for a long time, about 200 miles in the last 5 years (mostly to the MoT station and back, not much more.

It’s been running really badly the last couple of years so I’ve decided to get it sorted. It backfires, misfires, splutters, won’t idle and it will suddenly surge forward (scary when hitting a bend).

Obviously the petrol had gone bad so syphoned off almost all of it, added new petrol and seemed a bit better (not much).

My mate noticed that the right cylinder was running very badly and diagnosed a faulty fuel injector – replaced with a new one – again, a bit better but not much.

Got a mobile mechanic to give the bike a full service (oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter etc) – he advised new ignition coil needed, now fitted. All the old petrol removed and new fuel added. With the engine running I pulled the fast idle lever and it suddenly started running a good bit better and it would idle (almost).

Thinking that was it sorted I took it for a run – scary, the surging is worse than ever (maybe because both cylinders are now working). If trundling along at a steady say 3,000 RPM it behaves itself but any changes and it surges.

Any advice before I need to take out a new mortgage and put it into the BMW garage? TIA.

If you've had the tank lifted at any point check the throttle cables are seated properly.

Thanks, I'll check it out but the problem has been going on for ages and I hadn't ever removed the tank, just tilted it up when I needed to charge or replace the battery (it was fully removed and replaced today when the mobile mechanic replaced the fuel filter in the tank). Can't see how it would be that as it can surge even when riding at a steady speed without twisting the throttle.

Tilted the tank ?

It's enough All the above suggest the unbalanced throttle bodies! Usually the footbrake side as it revs its head off if it is the left side

I remember Ash being over here on a Tesco 1150 many years ago which ran quite rough and would sometimes conk out at traffic lights etc.

The rubber caps on the spigots on the underside of the throttle bodies were very badly perished and when replaced with new ones the bike ran much better as she wasn't sucking in extra air.

Easy to check and possibly a cheap solution.

The Great St. Eptoe of Putney Vale did something similar on my 20 year old 1150, to great effect.

I suggest cleaning the throttle bodies - in situ. Remove the bypass screws, consider replacing the o-rings, spray with carb cleaner. Remove vacuum take-off caps to allow to drain.
Check the TPS setting. Then balance the TBs.
Curiously, when I forgot to replace the vacuum take-off caps the running was only mildly affected. Took me a few miles to detect something not quite right.
Are your throttle cables frayed, esp the lower pair?

Hi @hops @hops I'm pleased to tell you that you were correct! Left cable was OK but right cable was unseated. Put back in place and bike is running sweet as a nut again. Huge thanks! Cheers, Dave
