I have just fitted an intercom and GPS and had to disconnect the battery, am I imagining it or did I read somewhere that the electronics have to be reset after the power has been restored?

just reset mine.

turn on ignition,
twist throttle fully open,
close throttle,
turn off ignition.

IIRC you have to do the throttle twist twice.
