R1150GSA Hall Sensor Failure

For anyone who would care to confirm that my Hall sensors are failing please have a read of the following symptoms:

Revs dying, bike stalling and of course the rev counter needle is jumping up and down.

By the way I've just limped the bike to Zaragoza on my first full day of a trip and am also in need of any good ideas, from anyone who may be local, about where I may find a mechanic who has the tools to remove the tight nut on the alternator pulley wheel.

What a start. And it's August so the place is closing down for the month

Yes, I have a complete BMW tool kit and some extras but I can't remember if the wheelnut wrench fits the nut on the alt' pulley.

I'm just going to load my .pdf manual onto this machine and see what it says.

I've been looking for bmw bike dealers in the are you are in but I'm rubbish as I can't find anything... would probably help if I could speak spanish. I'll keep looking though.

It should not take long to take your front cover off... the black one... you'll instantly be able to tell whether you can take the bolt off yourself... I can't remember the size of the nut!

Doing the same but I'm starving, smelly and just having a search on google. My Spanish has come on leaps and bounds today.

Sorry the wheelnut wrench does not fit the crankshaft pulley bolt.

That sounds like one of those things that you REALLY ought to do at home first.

I should imagine that it's just as easy to break your wrist or finger whilst trying that technique in the wild for the first time

PS I've no doubt it works BTW......it's just the image of a bloke kneeling by the bike holding a spanner, someone pinging the starter button and it just ending up in tears.

If you DO try it, do us a favour and video it?

I don't like the sound of holding it by hand - would it not be possible to brace the spanner against some hard chassis part?
I would also take the plug caps off to ensure it doesn't start

Just driven back from southern Spain - had to stop in San Sebastian to get the front wheel bearing replaced on the Seat Leon!! Diagrams and google translate proved invaluable - and I reckoned that I could speak enough to get by!!

Yes but I wouldn't do that on a 1200, it risks ripping the starter ring teeth off (cheap shite, pressed steel) which is what sometimes happens when they get hydrauliced with water

I used socket and bar and used a rag to wedge against chassis. Cracked the bolt loose first press of the starter button. First gear and foot on the rear brake allows you to tighten back up to the right torque.

Thanks Chaps. I've just had a night out in Zaragoza having a few cerveza's, some tapas, a look at the catherderal & museum, and of course the beautiful chica's with their sun kissed olive skin.

In the morning I'll order my parts, have a look behind the cover and check that 16mm nut, book another couple of days in the hotel and get my shorts and sandles out of the boxes.

Have you checked the connector to make sure there's no rust in there, or whether the wiring could be replaced - for the sake of a couple of hours to do some soldering or a squirt of WD40, you could be on your way again. Steptoe told me about the wrench on the nut and tap the starter button thing. Sounded a bit scary but worked a treat on my 1100. I wouldn't try it with less than a 12" ratchet though and the emphasis is on 'tap' the starter button. I also unplugged the injectors to stop it trying to start - that could get a bit interesting

Scribe the position of the hall sensor plate so you can fit the new one in the same place. You can check the timing by turning the engine over (spanner on the crankshaft nut) with the ignition on - listen for the fuel pump priming as the timing marks (little rubber plug, right hand side) come into line. That said, mine was spot on just by fitting the hall sensor plate in the same place.

Jesus chirst - There is no torque - a five year old could hold a spanner and do it. I've even used use the method with a short open ended spanner.

Try it before you start posting dire warnings .
