Hi,

I have recently bought an 05 R1200GS. It has some corrosion round the front of the Engine, which I understand is a fairly common problem.

I just wondered whether anyone knew of anywhere that would be able to strip down and respray the Engine casing in the South East / London area?

I've googled it, but not had any joy.

Would appreciate any reccomendations....

Thanks.

Hi,

I'd come accross your DIY fix before - looks fantastic. I would attempt this as a fall back option, but am keen to get it done professionally in the first instance.

I notice a few people mention they have paid BMW to replace them. Is £260 the likely cost?

Any further comments, reccomendations appreciated.

Cheers

Hi,
You could say it was done professionally in the first place by "BMW" :augie:D
First thing I would do is to whip the plastic alternator belt cover off and bin the foam insert, you can see how extensive the corrosion has got beneath the foam.
The job I done on my 1200 has lasted two winters till I sold the bike with no sign off any corrosion / flaking returning.

Theres two schools of thought, (1) powder coating (2) painting
I prefer painting because, you don't have to remove the timing chest, powder coating is difficult to touch up in event of damage, once a stone chip appears moisture can get underneath and large areas can flake off.
Painting is far easier to refinish after a few years simply by light wet an dry and respray top coat to give a fresh appearance. :thumb

Reading your first post again, I see you say you recently brought your 05 bike, did you buy it from a dealer, if so it might be worth returning and complaining to see if you can get a bit of goodwill, alternatively if you intend having the machine dealer serviced it may be worth complaining about the less than durable finish and see if they will offer to help, always worth a try !

I wouldnt bother to "pay" £260 or whatever for a replacement because in 12 months you will have the same problem:(

I had an 05 bike (a few years back) which I bought from NOG with a 12 month warranty. NOG replaced it without quibble when the first signs of a problem arose. They left out the foam insert which seems to be regarded as the main cause of the problem - holding moisture.:rob

Had the same thing last year on an 08 GSA. Same repair but this time Cotswold BMW added extra sealant around the fixtures and used stainlass steel bolts.:thumb2

hi j.bax just reading your tread and had the same problem when i bought my 06 6mths ago, tried cotswold bmw for goodwill gesture for frount cover and i pay towards the cost , but they didnt want to know ,no discount on parts or labour even though bmw customer services said they would , sprayed frount cover myself in the end which is simple enough if you allow yourself plenty of time to do it , and use acid etch for the base coat :thumb2

Hi,

Thanks for all the reccomendations!

The bike has gone back in to Cannon BMW today, where I hope the problem will be resolved.

I have bought one of the crud guards, a fantastic accessory! It sits exactly where is needs to, and combined with the extender fenda will 'almost' eliminate any future corroding materials reaching the danger zone!

Thanks again all!
