had a r1150gs years ago and sold to go to smaller offroad bikes. Currently have a norden 901 exp but not driving offroad much and have always missed the boxer.
looking at a 2018 r1200gs rallye with the short suspension (23k km) and a 2022 r1250gs trophy (14kkm)
Both bikes in great shape . I'm thinking the savings in cost for the offer 1200 which is about 1/3 or $8000 cad $ is probably worth it considering the bikes are not really that different. I always figured a 1200 had ample power and I am tall so would like the sport suspension on the older bikes
Opinions ?

Both more than adequate no doubt.

Is my 2020 1250 better in every way than my 2014 1200?

Yes. (Except maybe coating finishes on some surfaces).

Why are you looking at the short suspension model ?

If as you say you are tall why on earth would you be looking at at bike with the short suspension? Unless of course you have very short legs.
I’m 5’8” and can’t flat foot my 2023 R1250 GSA with the luggage on. It isn’t the lowered, short suspension one.

Height has nothing to do with whether you can flat foot a bike,

Its inside leg & arch, i can get one foot down with a lower lowered seat on my 2011

Sorry my mistake I meant to say I can flat foot my GSA. I did mention that having short legs might affect it.

Sorry typo above . The 1200 has the "sport" suspension , not short

Sorry had a typo in the original post. The 1200 I am looking at has the "sport" suspension so it is the taller gsa suspension which I am looking for

The 1200 is an excellent bike. Late versions were slightly better (2016.5 on..)
Assume 2018 will have the digital dash, which is nice and clear compared to the analogue.
1250 is more flexible and ‘a little’ more eager.
Some, not all 1250 have the adaptive lights. Excellent for night time riding.
Sport suspension? Wont change pegs/seat/bars dimensions, but the seat does have a high low position…on both if memory serves. Cant see the sport suspension doing anything significant for you, as the bikes are not exactly low.

I don’t think there is a massive difference between the GS bikes if you’re looking at one generation on. The 1150 is not as good as the 1200 but there isn’t much in it, same can be said if you compare the 1200 to the twin cam, the twin cam to the LC and the LC to the 1250. It’s when you jump two generations you can really see the difference.
I think I mentioned before I had a 2108 plate 1200 Rallye with full Remus system and H***top remap and I found it faster and more responsive than the 1250 shiftcam that I test rode.

Was it Hilltop that remapped it to 2108 spec?

Ive had

Mk1 1200, needed work , but once fixed ok

Mk 3 1200 LC. Needed a lot of work ecu, throttle body, throttle grip. Throttle loom, rear shock, fuel regulator, camshaft sensor, = unreliable

Mk 4 1250 LC needed work just after first service kH whiz wheel = unreliable

MK 2 1200TC (2011) just had major work done ABS pump, front knuckle and a disc
Other than that just consumable

OP i've just read your opening thread again and i'm confused

you say you looked at a rallye with short suspension by this i presume You mean a factory low suspension option x499A

Then you mention a sport suspension on older bikes

as far as i can see, they do a std suspension unit & the factory low, but no Sport suspension

The factory low removes 30mm of travel from the suspension units , and requires a shorter centre and side stand

The sport suspension option gives you 20mm more travel over the standard GS , ie the GSA suspension is fitted. Coming from more offroad oriented bikes which I have had the last 10years I figured the extra travel would be nice. Went to look at it on the weekend and pulled the trigger. May source a tall seat or a rallye seat to get more room to move around.
