Not sure if this is in the right section, but it's the closest as far as I can see ...
I viewed a 2009/09 R1200R Thursday. Minty as a mint thing, only done 4500 miles, seller seems utterly genuine and a nice chap, but (as well as only being serviced at 600 miles in 2009 and having an undocumented oil and filter change last year at about 2500 miles) it also has a high pitched squeak/squeal from the fuel pump.
Seller has been to Benham BMW who tell him it might keep going for ages but if he wants rid of the squeak, it needs a new fuel pump - £350 fitted but it will take about 5 days to get the part in. It also needs a full service (another £300 from same dealer). He was going to get both done but wanted them done at the same time which he can't before his impending holiday next week. He's offered to knock the price of both off his asking price for me to take the bike 'as is'.
I've no reason to disbelieve anything he's told me (he could have stayed silent about the squeak/squeal and I may not even have noticed it), but in an ideal world I'd rather buy a sorted bike with no issues and needing no work as it's often a PITA sorting out problems and getting work done on a bike you already know, without doing it on a bike you've just acquired IYSWIM.
I've done a bit of searching but not found anything specific. Is the fuel pump usually a problem on R1200Rs? I’ve read on KTM forums that fuel pumps can fail on 990 LC8 motors and a facet fuel pump is a common mod/upgrade for not too much wonga. Anyone know if the same can be done on an R1200R ? If it's prone to fail, I'd rather not put another BuMW part on.
If not, anyone already done this and / or able to suggest a realistic price for an independent BMW bike fettler to supply and fit a BMW item ?
