R1200RT vs 1200GS

Can't add much that hasn't been said all ready, but I'll stick my tuppence worth in.

Only had test rides (couple of hours) on each of these. Not long, but my impressions were:

GS (A): Superb; I'd got to the traffic lights 100m from the dealers when I realised 'I want one!' Rest of the two hours were thoroughly enjoyed throwing around the Yorkshire Dales.

RT: Liked the toys; flicked the electric seat on and forgot about it. Half a mile later I was wondering why my arse was feeling so hot... Electric screen was great, but a bit noisy in all but the highest position, which also gave best protection. Cruise control would be useful as well on the occasions I do long motorway stretches. Chuckability: No probs on A and sweping roads. Then got back on to the one-and-a-half lane ort less Yorkshire Dales roads. Took a shallow humpty-back bridge, followed immediately by a sharpish left hander, at about 50mph, as would on my 1100GS. Mine handles this regularly in its stride. The RT's front end tried to rival my climbing ropes for tying itself in knots. Not at all impressed, I headed back to the A&B roads.

I must add that this was one of the earlier models, it didn't have the ESA. I got my 1100 because I like riding the smaller 'back lanes', at which it excells. The RT is a great 'open road' bike, so would be better for my August Bank Holiday day trips to Skye. But if I were in the position where I had to make the choice, the GSA, no contest.

Another option ....

There is another option if you want a lighter machine than either the GS or RT ..... it's called the R1200R.
Fit a decent screen and panniers and you have a superb sports tourer. It handles better than both the RT and the GS, and is much more accomodating regarding seat height.

fair point Red

I haven't ridden the 1200R but have had the 1150 version as loan bikes a few times. Cracking machines they were.

Obviously a bit lacking in the weather protection department but good to ride and better than most people think. Overlooked by many buyers too.

;)

My first venture into the world of bmw was 06 gs. Great bike loved the height, (I'm a 6.1" mamil) the clear simple clocks and the quirky looks, great seat just a big comfy bike. Handled well on the twisty country roads but not so good on the fast straights or motorway. Screen a bit small. Would prefer no screen at all. As for pillion, swmbo struggled to get her leg over (sayin nothin) also struggled with vibe engine, not smooth. Might have been been me, but slow riding was never smooth. A look for a replacement saw me testing k1300gt. What an engine, brilliant fast smooth, really sticks to road and. .... too cramped. Next test 2011 r1200rt. Fast smooth, no vibes, Great engine, brilliant handling. Felt a bit heavy pushing it out of lock up, but as soon as you're on the move, all the weight seems to vanish... So I bought it. ....Sad to see the gs go, but love the rt. 100 mile trip home in torrential rain motorway and A roads and still smiling at this awesome machine. Almost 1000 miles covered in 10 days, motorway, A, B, and some unclassified and liking it more and more. Overall 2 great bikes, but for I use it for, on road, for longish trips on days off. Imho the rt if for me...... for now..

Another vote for the RT over the GSA from me.

I changed my RT for a GSA 12 months ago and if I could turn the clock back I would definitely stick with the RT.

I will go back to an RT as soon as I can afford to.

I have an RT and a GS, both twin cams. I ride the RT like I'm a policeman. I ride the GS like there are no policemen! Last year I only had 2 days to get from Liverpool to Reijka at the top of Croatia. I'd hesitate to do that on the GS, one the RT is was a good ride.

But, can I get this right" This is the UKGsers site - and most people on this thread prefer RTs? Should we change the site title?

The R1200RT is a very capable mile muncher. The R1200GS is far more fun to ride.

Nail hit squarely on the head :thumby: The RT is quicker than the old hex head GS though and handles better when fully loaded. For solo fun the GS is better. The Mrs described my old Gs as sitting in a comfy but boring armchair. She loved the RT, but likes the power of my new GS LC. In truth she'd have preferred it if I'd bought an RT LC, but the new GS is so much fun I'm sure I made the right choice and it makes me look 10 years younger than the RT....
