R45 Re-Commission

Happy to report that after following Mike's advice and giving the pushrod tubes a gentle "adjustment" I now have no oil leaks

Leak from the petcock is also sorted

On the brake issue I stripped all of the lines off the bike and it does look like one of the lines is more restricted than the others when I blow air through them . When I initially checked them when I stripped the bike they were done one at a time over a period of time whereas now doing them side by side I can see a difference

I'm going to replace the brake lines and see if that cures the issue , if thats doesn't do it then I'll swap the master cylinder for a new one . It's probably just as well to swap the lines anyway

Front brakes all working - it had a partially blocked lower LH line , the small hole in the MC was blocked when I re-checked it (thanks Jay for the advice) and the brake light switch had failed !! All new black Goodridge lines fitted , new switch and cleared the small hole in the master cylinder

Well I thought all I had left to do was balance the carburettors and check the timing and I woudl be out riding tomorrow

But no.......

Started it up and I have next to no pressure out of the RH exhaust silencer . Pulled the spark plug lead on the RH side and the bike stutters and stalls . Swapped the coils and HT leads over and issue stays on the RHS . Checked the exhaust manifold temperatures and they were around the same . Decided to pull the silencers off and the pressure from the headers is identical so it appears it's the RH silencer restricting the flow . The RH silencers is also 1.1Kg heavier than the LH one ?
I've not came across a blocked silencer before . I don't think it could be that the LH Silencer is internally collapsed and free flowing and the RH one is OK as there is next to nothing coming out of the RH one so I think its the RH one being blocked

So its either find a way to unblock it or pay out for a new pair of Keihan's (or try and get a used pair)

Standby for a family of mice being fired out as if from a peashooter next time you fire it up 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Just a thought, are peashooters now considered offensive weapons and banned by the health and safety nanny state brigade?

Nothing at all will come out - I've tried and if i shine a torch I can see a plate straight across the inside bore from both ends , I'm guessing it's perhaps supposed to be a mesh or some sort of baffle and has somehow been clogged up

I've got a spare set of stainless r65/r45 silencers. I think they are 'Armours' brand.

If they are the 35mm ones I would be very interested in buying them ;-)

I can even collect them as I pass by Guisborough every Thursday on my way to Whitby

I'll drop you a PM

Went over to Guisborough this morning and collected a pair of stainless silencers - many thanks Simon

Fitted straight on to the bike with no issues at all

Checked the timing with a strobe light and then balanced the carburettors at idle and at 3000 RPM

Took it out and did a 60 mile shakedown test ride , it ran great with only a few minor issues

LH mirror came loose , fixed at the roadside with the onboard toolkit

Clutch needed a little more tweaking as it was biting right at the end of the hand lever release stroke , simple adjustment with the knurled adjuster and it was sorted

Indicators worked at standstill but the warning beeper did not , once moving the LH indicator worked and beeped but the RH indicator flashed both indicators and didn't bleep (the bike does not have hazards) . Hand signals therefore had to be used for this maiden voyage but thankfully my route was on backroads and B roads so wasn't an issue . On getting home and investigating found that the relay was faulty . I now need a new replacement - anyone got one they want to part with ?

So all in all a succesful mechanical re-commission and another airhead back on the road

That's a fantastic job; loads of class; with the original badges it could well be a very well kept original without hinting at the work that's gone into it; :beerjug:
