R45 Re-Commission

That is lovely. The R45 and R65 look quite modern really. (y)

... and whilst airheads in general are relatively uncommon, the R45 is distinctly are, I think that's part of the charm of this bike - when did you last see an R45, never mind such a well sorted one?

Some time ago for sure.......I actually rode one back in the day. Slower and heavier than a 400 superdream but much better built and with a charm or its own. (y)

New indicator relay fitted and blinkers functioning as designed . Original was marked as 06/78 so it has done well ;-)

So with this one finished I'm now looking for another project bike..........

Had four hours out today and the bike ran great with no issues whatsoever. I’d say it’s best at 50-60 but it will happily sit at 70mph at 5000rpm (redlines at 7500) . The braking with the twin front disc setup is very good .

It must be very gratifying to be riding a wel sorted bike, knowing you did all the work yourself.

A little more fettling on the R45 for a few things I still wasn’t 100% happy with

First was the low pitch popping sound from the crankcase breather at tick over . A common problem it seems with the older type spring and disk breather valves . Removed the offending item and replaced it with the newer type reed valve . Hopefully this will sort it , I’ll find out tomorrow when I run the bike as it was too late to fire it up tonight

Second job was fitting a new Venhill featherlight clutch cable . I’d left the original cable fitted but the clutch lever felt slightly heavy so decided to fit a new cable

Final job left is to fit new Speedo and Rev counter glass as the originals are very cloudy

Had an early morning run over to Whitby from Durham on the R45 . An O545 start and I was immediately reminded how much better adaptive LED headlights are over an H4 bulb in a headlight bucket !

The bike started first press of the button and came off choke within a few minutes . Even with my heated vest , gloves and headlight on the charging system ran fine with no warning light even at tick over

Bike ran faultlessly and I was over in Whitby for 0715 ready for the day ahead looking after the grandchildren

Looking forward to the ride home later this afternoon in the daylight and warmer temperature
