forgive my ignorance,i know very little about early bm,s.i was looking at the r80,bikes with q tech subframes ,very nice:drool.could any one tell me if you could use a road trim r80 as a basis for a project like that??cos forks, wheels ,seat and subframe are off to ebay!the tank is similar.you can pick up a decent r80 up a lot cheaper than a gs.thanks.mike

If you're talking about monolever R80 bikes then the work involved would out weigh buying a Paralever 80 and modifying it. If you mean converting an R80ST into a G/S then you would still be looking at a fair bit of cash to convert but to be honest the ST is a better bike than the g/s so you would be spending loads of cash on little more than a styling exercise.

I'd have a go on an airhead before you buy one they are an acquired taste. Plenty are bought and then quickly sold on often loosing the owner lots of money in the process.

a friend and i were talking about this yesterday, and we reckoned about £2K, plus or minus adjustment for degree of rattiness.

I can honestly say (from experience) that specials have a tendancy of running away cost wise.. Even the most basic sort of GS thing like my twin shock bitza (R80RT based) ended up costing 3/4 of what a cheap para would be! And is not quite as capable.
That said it's been good fun and I certanly won't bump into someone on the same bike.. And as it's an on going project one daywith enough cash I might actually end up with what I was lusting after originally...

I'd quite fancy another R80g/s to keep along side the Guzzi for the trails and to tinker with. The trouble is the bloody daft money they go for, and to then start thinking about QTech stuff and the like, well their beyond me. I suspect that if I do end up with a trail bike as a second bike it will be something like the TTR600 advertised on here a month or two back or an XR400. A much better bike for the trails for about half of what you could get some old airhead for.

would be a rough mono g/s for 2k

as a rough idea, i know of one right now, possibly for sale at around that figure. tatty but looks ok, original even (but it has ST ancestry). rattles, but runs fine.

are you awash with better ones then? i hardly ever see any for sale.

s/h bike prices have gone mad lately. TBH i thought it was going to be more expensive.

ST's are a lot better bike than the g/s..:eek

IMHO the ST is the finest handling airhead BMW ever made.......

After years of folk buying them cheap and converting them to g/s spec..
:blast The penny has at last dropped and ST's are going up in price.:thumb2
Wish I had half a dozen bog standard ones :drool...

Barb is hinting that I ought to pass on some of the bikes I haven't used for a while :eek

We shall see :augie:augie:augie

I agree on the ST but the G/s is still the better bike if you use it as intended street/trail....the gs will always be a compromise on the road even today. My first bike on passing my test was a monolever r80gs,i put over 80k on it in 5 years(no car licence) and have nothing but great memories.I like others have looked at revisiting my youth but the prices have gone mad...i think 3k is more realistic for an unmolested example

Proff
you got anything suitable pre 1980, ime looking for something to attend the moto piston rally on in October:thumb
